You use actual voice conversations. It's easy to sit back and type up an E-mail, but the employer can tell much more about you from a phone call. It shows more interest when you go voice to voice instead of impersonal contact.
Yes, Killer. You should be calling them. If I were you, I'd call back as soon as you're able after the surgery. I honestly wouldn't have mentioned having a surgery as that could hinder your chances.
