CPA cost big bucks, PLUS you have to keep going to school EVERY year

You should take the option as a long term investment. With the recognition of CPA, you can make a lot more down the future than any typical accountants.

If you get your 150 hours of schooling, complete the exam (passing all four parts, and yes its kind of expensive) and then get a job in public accounting you're going to be golden to a private firm after a few years. Also any self respecting company will pay for your CPE (Continuing Professional Education) while you work for them. They're usually like seminars and such to keep you up to date as an accountant.

Did you do an internship while you were in school?

Yep. The firm I worked at for years paid for every penny of my CPE and required it, of course. They also reimbursed you for fees when you passed the CPA exam.

We didn't have to do an internship as a part of our curriculum because the school realized that the students weren't learning anything because the accounting firms were using them as free labor. I wouldn't mind doing an internship to learn all the ins and outs but currently I do work part time and go to school so I don't have time for an internship anywhere, especially if they don't want to pay.
