Budget gap less than amount state has returned in tax breaks
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Tax cuts given to Ohio businesses and individuals as part of a 2005 tax reform package could have more than covered the state's latest projected budget gap, critics of the tax changes said Thursday.
The gap also could have been avoided by targeting last year's property tax cut for senior citizens to those with a financial need, rather than allowing every elderly resident to partake, said Zach Schiller, research director for Cleveland-based think tank Policy Matters Ohio.
