Paul, this is a pretty big deal....Russia is CLEARLY doing this for "show". In the big scheme of things, what does Russia really need this plot of land for? Russia is HUGE and and South Oscetia (SP) is like a grain in the sand for them. Why in the world would Russia begin rushing troops to the region just at the start of the olympics? It was all tactics. Georgia is our ally, and they have troops in Iraq serving alongside US units. So we are just gonna let them be crushed by a huge superpower who is just doing this to show that they can easily crush a nation? No matter how much firepower or technology Georgia had, they do not have the sheer size and force as Russia. Russia sent NINE Armor Brigades to Georgia! What the hell for? This is just a show of force of part of their army, Russia is not a ally of the US, they do shady sh*t all the time and this attack did not make any sense. Georgia's President sent the cease fire packet up before noon today, but Russia isn't signing? Why? They obviously had no problem running over Georgia Troops, why keep pushing forward and fighting? Why are they already in central Georgia when all they wanted was South Oscetia? none of it adds up.
they've been building their army, and weapons for how long? they have been supplying enemies of the US with their weapons for how long? They want to sell enriched uranium to Iran!

thanks, I am by no means trying to preach or talk about anything that I do not know, but it's pretty cut and dry and none of it adds up on Russia's intent....at this point, both sides are pointing fingers on who started what, but seriously....like Georgia ever posed a threat to Russia.

Its so similar to what the US is doin to Iran...lol nobody knows exactly whats the problem.....
From my research it would be best to sit back and let them sort this out theirselves.. too much politics with little to gain but much to lose for us to get involved. It is not in our interest to ruffle feathers with Russia right now.
Negative. Iran is helping Iraqi insurgents wether it's blindly or turning the other way....but they are letting it happen and they know it. Iran wants Enriched Uranium....which they have no need for, UN Atomic Security even said that it's voted that Iran does not need and has no use for it, and it's skeptical that they would use it for anything but weapons. Their president is balls out crazy and tempts the US almost every other day with comments such as "The US would be crazy to invade us, because we are far superior and would crush them" and Iran's president says that crap all the time, and to me, that's just them provoking sh*t for no good damn reason.
in a perfect world that would be ideal.....BUT.....in the big scheme of things, Russia's attack on such a small country and small army did not make sense, and to blockade the Black Sea is odd as well, it's not like Georgia had a Navy. Russia has been sitting back and gaining alot of ground in the last 5 years, making leaps and bounds getting their game together, and to me it just seems like they are ready to take their seat back in the world super power game...which is fine, but they still sell weapons to US enemies.
To use anything more than diplomacy with Russia right now would result in absolute chaos. We are taking a risk by transporting their troops home but I understand they are an ally. This thing can get out of hand very quickly, and I agree with you on what Russia is currently doing in Georgia.. not a whole lot of it makes sense but do we really want to make this our conflict?
They want Nuclear technology for power.. and yes the US would be crazy to try and invade Iran. This is not Iraq, they have more terrain than just desert and a much more stout military. Also lets not forget Iran was helping us in Afghanistan, since providing aid is the new measuring stick for allied nations.

Iran wants nuclear weapons. If they get them it's a matter of time untill they use them aginst Isreal, and possibly the U.S. aslo. Destroying Isreal is practicaly national policy for them.

I never stated that they said they would nuc. Israel. I stated that they (Ahmidinejad specifically) speak of destroying Israel, and would use nuclear weapons if they had them ^ quotes clearly illustrate this I think. Of course they are not going to specifically come out and say it, that would only cause more international pressure to keep them from getting nuclear capability.

I really don't understand everyone's problem with contries like Iran and Georgia. The UN is clearly up in arms in trying to put embargo's on Iran and is against what they are doing. The US Stepping up in a situation would reflect the Majority's opinions except we are the only one's with enough military might except for other European powers like England or France who are able to make a stiff statement by putting the foot in the door.
If something were to happen in Iran or Georgia on a larger scale, we would not be alone this time (ignoring the very small amount of foreign aid in Iraq).
I'm not advocating making the first move, but if measures get extreme enough then i see no reason we should sit back while Russia has its way in building the USSR again. Assuming that is a bit extreme, but you get the point.

Just because we're at the the other end of the superpower cannon, doesn't mean we're right. How extreme does it have to get? Do you know how many countries we've bombed since the end of WW2, that have posed no significant threat to US? It's become a really expensive hobby, and it doesn't really help anything in Global affairs. We're in serious debt, and we just keep blowing money that we don't have trying to rescue people, who aren't even sure they want to be rescued to begin with.
Bombing someone because you're scared of the ideology they'll adopt, is like blowing up the universities your children applied too that you didn't agree with. Either way it's still up to them, and they're still going to make their choice.
We cannot act alone as the global police force. That is simply to much responsibility, and too much power for one group of people to have.
Why shouldn't they build the USSR again? Because it's communist? The red scare, was just a scare. They're just people man, it might seem different and dumb to us, but if the people are seriously fed up with that government they'll do something about it.

I agree with mostly everything you said.
But theres one huge problem with your arguments, most of these movements that we have countered have been started by a select few and usually people within the military who have started coups to overthrow the government and are radicals with self interest.
Examples... Castro was hailed as a hero when he first took over through his guerilla tactics and the US helped him do so. Then he turned his ways and became corrupt and completely self interested, now the people hate him and evidently from the amount of people on inner tubes each year they obviously don't like it.
Lenin led a movement hailed by the people and was brought in by organizations from Eastern Europe (I believe Germany or Poland where he had been hiding) to start his revolution in 1917 (correct me if the date is wrong). People rallied behind him and beat back the Whites. Stalin takes over and the dream dies. He is a ruthless dictator... no one WANTED communism under his rule. It was a autocratic dictatorship where the Elite ruled over a communist commune who had no choice or say in what happened. Hundreds of Thousands were taken to camps in Siberia and killed, those who opposed him or spoke up were murdered, thousands starved, thousands had to march on berlin with no boots, guns, or food.
I see what you are saying, if the people want it then they should do what they want. Rarely in any communist country did the people WANT it. Maybe originally but almost in every situation the leader or party officials that took over quickly turned their interests to themselves rather then the people.
The difference in your analogy with the unversity is that the people choose to go to to that school and the university is completely open to free thinking, that which most of these countries are not. China is starting to move in this direction but there are still many flaws, hopefully they can fix it themselves.
That is why we have to step in to help the people.

Both sides have blood on their hands. Georgia was the one who started the attack, the South Ossetians have been denied basic services like water for a while now, then they launched an offsensive on Tshkinvali the South Ossetian capital. Then Russia, being the more capable country, stops them, then goes a bit overboard. The reason Putin gives a crap about this place which is a bit smaller than road island is that most of the South Ossetians are Russian citizens and to stall Georgia from joining NATO.
Truth is that it is best to sit this out and not take sides, because Georgia is our ally, but Georgia did start the war. So looking either way does not look good, so best thing to do for USA is to be neutral and call for peace and not call anyone the bad guy.

yeah, the media mentions it under their breath.
but as i research more, its hard to tell exactly what happened. It seems to boil down to the South Ossetians themselves starting it and not Georgia or Russia, but its known the Georgia escalated it.
