Default Don't buy from large gas companies!?

Got this in my email today from my cousin. Sounds like it might make sense.

THIS IS NOT THE 'DON'T BUY' GAS FOR ONE DAY, BUT IT WILL SHOW YOU
HOW WE CAN GET GAS BACK DOWN TO $1.30 PER GALLON.

This was sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one of
his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. If you are tired of
the gas prices going up AND they will continue to rise this summer,
take time to read this please.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy gas on a certain day'
campaign that was going around last April or May!
It's worth your consideration. Join the resistance!!!!

I hear we are going to hit cl ose to $ 4.00 a gallon by next summer and
it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down?

We need to take some intelligent, united action. The oil companies
just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to 'hurt'
ourselves by refusing to buy gas .

It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoev er thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can
Really work. Please read on and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $2.00 is super
cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.98 for regular unleaded in my town.

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we
need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
    marketplace..not sellers.

With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consum ers need
    to take action.

The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we
hitsomeone in thepocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And, we can do
    that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.

But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force
    a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline
from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.

If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their
prices. Ifthey reducetheir prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and
Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me
at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach
    millions of people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least
    ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten
more (300 x 10 = 3,000)... and so on, by the time the message reaches
the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION
    consumers .
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends e
ach, then 30 million people will have been contacted!

If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED
    MILLION

    PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all!

(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have
to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, yo u just
aren't a mathematician. But I am . so trust me on this one.

How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to
ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could
conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!
Acting together we can make a difference.

If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I sugg est
that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE
$2.00 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

    Keep it going

yea it all BS. We have to buy our gas anyways so gas prices arent going to be affacted at all.

Also, if BP has excess gas that they cant sell to the general public, they simply sell it to off-brand stations like Race Trac, or QT. The difference is that the additives that BP or Chevron puts in the gas are not present in the gas sold by QT and Race Trac.

well theres certainly no harm in trying. who knows what might actually happen. it may work(just i doubt it, thats an opinion not a fact).

fyi qt does not sell gas for a profit. nor is it an oil company. we just buy from producer at X cost and sell it cheaper than our neighbors, even if that means we sell for below what we pay. if we get a profit from gas, then great. but it is almost purely controlled by competition.

Since gas is a necessity it is inelastic, regardless of what gas station you go to you are still contributing to the problem by purchasing gas. (Plus the oil companies come together to fix prices, see OPEC)

I just cant wait to c the new types of technology that will gain traction soon. When and if we run out of easily refinable oil. I wonder what the future will hold including the future of racing.

i hate that the gas price is so high but it is actually good for the economy... it shows how scarce gasoline actually is and it should cause a trigger in people to change their means of transportation. If gas was back at $1.30 we would still have SUV's selling like hotcakes and fossil fuels running out faster then we do now. Since prices are just incentives to direct resources to their most productive use, the rise of gas prices should be an incentive that changes your state of thinking, and open you up to different means of transportation. I bet if gas prices we're still that low, E85 production , hydrogen, electric, hybrids... etc wouldn't have been started, and the gas price would actually still be that high its just we'd be paying through taxes instead of directly at the pump.

I am paying $4.25/gallon for it. And QT doesnt have to profit from their gas prices look at all the business they get from workers in the mornings alone.

all i was saying is that we're gonna be paying that much no matter if the gas price is 1.30 or 4.00, at 1.30 we'll be paying higher taxes. at 4.00 we're paying directly. and i'm not a tree hugger, i wouldn't mind the world being a cleaner place live but i'm not gonna sit there and rant about it how we should make a change.

Actually Rizz's comment was one of the brightest.. your comment is very stupid considering how you started it.

Do you even know how the process works? By your rationale gas in Alaska should be under $1.00 a gallon considering that is where we drill for oil but coming from someone who spent 18 years there I can assure you that is not the case.

Want to know why? Cause we sell it to other countries A lot of you dumb asses don't read before you post or grasp a good understanding of the subject at hand. EVEN IF WE DRILL FOR OIL IN THE UNITED STATES IT IS STILL BEING SOLD FOR PROFIT TO OTHER COUNTRIES!

It is a GLOBAL COMMODITY, furthermore even if ANWR was opened up it would be at least a decade before that oil hit the market.. hardly a quick fix.

People like Rizzler that grasp the concept get it, decrease dependency rather than increase supply.

^^ Yeah, takes about 10 years to refine oil. just my opinion there is no shortage in oil, the war is whats making prices go up, therefore they are not going to drill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Yes its good from an environmentalist stand point and will put more money and incentives into research for finding alternative fuels that are cost effective.

BUT.......... by no means are we nearly out of oil like you put it. We have a solid 50+ years at this growth rate of fules left.

All a boycott of ExxonMobil stations would do is hurt the station owners who depend on ExxonMobil for their gas. And the station operators who aren't making their money from gas anyway, they are making their money from the store attached to the station.

And all the ExxonMobil station owners would have to do to get around the boycott anyway would be to change their sign to something else.

the concept make sense. However, oil is a necessity. Also, the USD is going down. No way we can get it down that much. Want cheaper gas? Let's move to Venezuela or Middle East.

But without ambition, how will anyone ever advance in anything and how/why would anyone have the drive to work hard, make improvements on anything, etc.? Communism and extreme socialism removes the desire of people to work hard, and therefore eventually drains the economy. After all, why would anyone want to work really hard to get an education and work hard in whatever career he/she chooses when that person will simply receive nothing more in the end than the person next door that never went to school and just does some menial job if that person works at all? This is a problem that has clearly been seen in communist countries and is becoming evident in countries like Venezuela that have socialist governments. On paper, it seems great for everyone, regardless of job/education/race/whatever to be completely equal to one another, but it just doesn't work.

I think the sarcasm went right over your head.

I get these gas emails all the time. I still get gas when I need it from whatever station is the closest, and has it the cheapest. There's a BP and Citgo 1 mile from my house. The Racetrac and others are about 7 miles away. If my Subaru gets around 20 mpg, I'm using almost a whole gallon (and actually will with city traffic) just to get gas for 5 cents cheaper a gallon. 15 gallon tank = 75 cents < $4.00 for a gallon. On another note, I'm actually excited about the new cars coming now that the companies are shutting off half their big truck assembly lines, IE: Ford Festiva, Chevy Beat, New Toyota Hybrid, Dodge Hornet (not confirmed yet). Yes, most of these are American cars, but their concepts and mule shots show potential.
