As a history major at Emory University for 2 years (before I changed majors) I have learned quite a bit about the world and its past mistakes. I was born and raised in GA and it bothers me that so many southern states and their inhabitants take a flag which represented people who died (as the battle flag) and chose to use it as a symbol for their desire to keep this country white protestant. That isn't what the confederacy was about. If anything the confederacy fought to maintain state's rights and keep govermental influence to a minimun (the policies which this country was founded on 230+ years ago). If you really want to keep this country free of minorities I suggest u visit south georgia and witness the work put forth by the migrant farm workers and decide if you would be willing to perform those tasks for 6 dollars an hour. The flags of the confederacy are no more than historical remnants so stop putting them on your Z-71 and portraying them as symbols of hatred. It makes educated southerners embarassed because we have to interact with individuals from the rest of the world in a professional, and respectful manner.

This man here and people like him, make the world a place for all, open to all and a home for all. I wont go on and go as usual, but I respect this random person. He's not slow and narrowminded as most on this site and in states named Kentucky.

    Indeed.
Accurate history is both positive and negative in certain aspects. Whitewashing or glossing over it to please any group would be
    a diservice to all.

When I lived in another fair southern city there was located not too far from my house a little known Confederate cemetary which among other things contained a mass grave of unknowns. Under the American flag which flew on a pole in middle of the grounds was also flown the flag which is discussed here. Some, whom I would characterize as 'ignorant', thought that flag should be removed. I thought it highly appropriate given the nature of how it was flown and the souls buried there.

Generally this small place was largely ignored and the confederate emblem became extremely weathered and actually became shredded and torn. One day a passing vacationing family interested in history stopped to read the plaque and inscription. Noticing the shredded confederate banner they contacted local authorities and out of their own pocket paid for a new Confederate flag to be used there.

As it happened, that family was from the north, decended from Union soldiers and although their heritage was of a 'different' nature they recognized the common bond of botherhood all Americans share and wished to show proper resect to the fallen in that cemetary by having proper emblems displayed.
Thank God not all people are ignorant of American history or its emblems.

I've always heard of it referred to as the confederate battle flag.

And as far as it referring to a dark time or whatever... history is history. You can't pick and choose which parts of history you want to remember. The bad and the good are what makes our country the country it is today. I think people turned the confederate battle flag into a big deal when it really isn't. A lot of people who I've talked to, even your classic "backwoods redneck" type people, don't have the flag up because they're making a "white power" statement. They have it up because they're just proud to be southern. Personally, I love the south, and I love the fact that I'm a southerner. It has nothing to do with my views on politics or racism or anything else... Georgia is my home, and I love it here. I grew up on a farm, learned how to swim in a lake, rode horses before I was walking... I love the small-town, "everyone knows everyone" feeling. A lot of people share that sentiment, and THAT is what makes them proud to be a southerner. Not the fact that we seceded from the union, not the fact that we kept slaves, not the fact the we lost the civil war. I can see how the battle flag could be a painful reminder of the past for African American people... but if you really stop and think about it... the civil war ended with the emancipation proclamation, which freed slaves. So while the battle flag may at first bring out bad memories, think of where we would be today had the civil war never happened. The south losing the civil war prompted the signing of the emancipation proclamation... had it never been signed, would the civil rights movement of the 60's have happened? I think of the civil war as the first step towards civil/equal rights for African Americans. It may not have been the proudest moment in our country's history, but neither was Christopher Columbus throwing the bodies of native americans that had died of smallpox back into native american camps so that the disease would spread... nor was the industrial revolution, when 6 year old children would work in factories for 18 hours a day. It's all a part of history.

That's my spare change on the subject.

Fuck stance. Stance is for kids in skinny jeans with Justin Beiber haircuts. You don't need stance when you got swagger.
