    Default retire the penny?

so as usual im flippin radio stations on my way home from work, and theres nothing on. go to 95.5, and theyre having some talk show regarding the retirement of the penny. interesting.

apparently some want to get rid of it, as it costs the US mint more to produce than it is worth. under this idea, all cash transactions would round to the nearest nickle. .2,.8,.9 transactions would round to 0 while .3,.4,.7,. would round to 5. supposedly a new rounding tax would be imposed, to take back more of your $ for whatever you gained from rounding. supposedly the poorer people, or those without debit/credit cards would be hassled the most, as they only have cash.

those who advocate this plan claim that the penny is a waste of money and a waste of time(click link for warrants to claims)

nickels are made (75%?) of copper. there is a politician from some high copper producing state who would stand to benefit from removing the penny, and is a supporter of the movement.

    discuss.

this has been discussed many times before, they only reason i think they should remove the penny is because it costs our gov't more than it is worth

i agree, pennies are nothing but a waste of time and material. they are not worth having unless you have them in unmanageable amounts. even then it would just be a hassle to get them traded in for something bigger

FUN ACTIVITY: I do it to show my students all the time: Put a penny over high heat. Thezinc has a lower melting point than the copper covering. You can get peices of copper that are paper thin when you leak the zinc out.

yea I experienced this with a home made "penny coke can stove", which is a small camp stove made from the bottom half of two coke cans that burns alcohol. The penny covers the fuel fill hole. Once i fiqured out how to make my own fuel that burned twice as hot for twice as long, the pennies ( I was using 2 at a time for extra weight to hold pressure in) started to melt and fall down into the fuel tank, which in turn heated the fuel way too fast, which made too much pressure and exploded the stove. Now I use a nickel so I enjoy keeping my hair.

I dont know of a currency in the world where they dont have a unit for .01

if everything has to be in multiples of 5 and have a tax to incorperate rounding. its just going to make things complicated and it will seem weird to the rest of the world.

it costs $.0123 to make a penny. if the government is concered about their $.0023 per penny, then they can just figure out a slightly more effiecent way to manufacture it. Such as make a penny 10% thinner or 10% smaller diameter... something like that.

I guess also we have to know exactly how many pennies are produced each year to see the actual amount extra it costs them.

^Nah, then they'd just mark the new fuel up and the penny would end up being $3 a lb.
