Another good piece of advice is to pay yourself first. Before any other bills, put money away for yourself. My wife and I are only 23 and we focus on savings, investments and retirement. Before that, we worked hard to get to where we're at. We didn't get here by maxing credit cards, blowing entire paychecks, and living beyond our means. We quickly learned how to spend (and how not to) our money. Spend wisely, save, and play later.
It all comes down to self discipline. You either have it or you don't. If you don't, find alternatives to forcing yourself to save.
Set small goals. Aim for $X in a savings account in 3 months, then 6 months, then a year, and so on. If your current job/living situation doesn't allow you to save, start looking for ways to be able to save more (second job, cutting back on luxuries, use public transportation).
Self discipline is key.
