I used taxactonline.com this yr. It was $16 to e-file fed, and state. I usually print the forms out, and mail them but I didn't feel like waiting six weeks for the refunds. I got my state refund in a couple days, and my fed should be here anyday now.

If you want a quick refund, e-file, and ask for it to be direct deposited.

drew did our taxes.. if you can use the EZ form then it only taxes a few minutes.. if you have lots of deductions and such you may want to have someone do them (H&R Block or whomever).. if you don't mind having them take a chunk out of YOUR money.. i've heard good things about turbotax though.. it's about $70 bucks or so but worth it!

just remember, having your parents do them doesn't cost a thing!

I may start offering to do some returns. I have passed the CPA exam (will get my license this year) and I have two years in the game at the CPA firm level. I can do most returns in five minutes. I would offer to do returns for 30-40 bucks. At least when you pay a professional you know your return is being prepared by someone who KNOWS tax law and stays abreast of changes. If anyone is interested, hit me on one of my addresses below.

Fellow GSU'er? Did you graduate with an accounting degree? Cause I heard you don't need an accounting degree to take the CPA exam.

Was going to start master of tax this summer, but I am in the process of applying for PhD. Graduated from North Georgia College with an accounting degree. You need a certain number of accounting hours to even sit for the exam. I think you need 120 hours as well. Check the details at www.nasba.org

Technically, you don't have to have the degree in accounting. You do have to have 30 semester hours in accounting to be licensed. There is a minimum hour requirement to sit for the exam. The 30 hours is imperitive. The test is not too difficult, if you study and practice problems. I worked over six thousand problems in total.

I do need to add that you need a minimum number of hours in business courses, as well. I think it is 39 hours. Check nasba to verify. Most test takers are accounting grads, or finance/accounting double majors. Most of my friends did the double major to get the required 150 semester hours for licensure.

I do my own... (duh, I'm an accountant). Cheapest way for most people is to go to www.irs.gov and follow the links for "Free File". Most people can e-file their federal for free and then pay $9-12 for state which is a great deal.

I used to do friends and family taxes but I try not to do too many anymore because it got to where I had more and more people asking while I was working 70 hours a week. I'm (finally) out of public accounting now but I don't feel like bothering with it. Though I probably give about 50 hours worth of tax advice on various forums each year. After 7 years of accounting, I'm used to it.
