Default veyron: good, bad or the ugly?

Im wondering what you guys think of the Bugatti Veyron. Like or dislike?

Ive noticed that people seem to be of split opinion about these cars. Some people hail them as the best performance cars ever built (and possibly that ever could be built in our "regulated" automobile culture.) Some people think they are overpriced, ugly and lacking in "soul."

I will admit I used to be in the overpriced/ugly opinion group. However, the more I see and read about them, it becomes seemingly apparent that the cars really are the most amazing automotive achievements ever created...and maybe that ever will be created. The drivetrain, suspension, active aerodynamcis and interior are in a league totally of their own in performance, engineering and function. I still think the car is "ugly," even after seeing two of them in real life, although I saw them at an exotic car show next to some of the most beautiful cars in existence, so it was a tough comparison for it. The only problem is that its made in France, but I guess you cant win them all...

Performance wise, its so far ahead of everything else that its laughable. Ive heard that the veyron can do 0-240 mph faster than the McLaren f1 could do 160-240 mph. I dont know if thats true, but its mind blowing to consider. Braking is on-par with the acceleration. Only in handling does it lag behind a few other cars, but youre talking about a 4500# car that pulls .95G on a skidpad. Its fantastic.

Its also of-note that each Veyron costs Bugatti (VW) $5 million dollars to make, so even at $1.4 million new, they are loosing 3x that.

Anyway, what do you all think about it?

Are you sure they are 5million to make or is that a rumor. +1 if you give me documentation of that.

It's pretty amazing, have you seen the top gear video?

I dont like them personally, they are "ugly and lacking in soul" Now where I stand apart from the rest of the people who dislike it is I agree that it is incredible machine, but I still would never want one. There are many cars out there that will outperform it also, maybe not in sheer acceleration or top speed, but on a road course all of that falls to pieces with it trying to throw all that weight around turns. I also am a huge critic of anything less than a manual transmission in a supercar. If it's not a 3 pedal car, it better have a dedicated F1 tranny sitting there (none of that, you can shift if you want, otherwise the car will do it for you) a la Ferrari Enzo, which the most hideous creation to come out of Pininfarina (it's because Okuyama took over)

I actually got the 5 million per car cost from Jeremy Clarkson from the Top Gear test...if you consider that reputable. Im sure this is taking into consideration the development cost also, if you devide it by the planned number of cars.

Keep in mind the Veyron is a road/GT car, not a sports/track car. There are probably a few cars that, on the right track, could outrun the Veyron. I dont think any production cars are going to outrun it on a big track like the Ring, which have long straights where it can use its tremendous speed advantage. On some smaller, tight tracks, I agree the Veyron is somewhat out of its element.

As far as the trans goes...the Veyron does have the VW DSG gearbox, which Ive heard is the best performing automatic manual you can get. I have driven a Ferrari 360 with the F1 trans, and I hated the way it felt. Ive never driven a car with the DSG transmission though, although Im sure the one in the Veyron is worlds stronger and different feeling than the VW implementations. I would rather shift for myself also, but I think that, in a GT car like this, an auto-manual makes a lot of sense.

Personally, I "like" the Mercedes SLR more than the Veyron, although Im sure a lot of you will criticize it for the same things you do the Veyron (big, heavy, luxo, automatic,) but I think it has more "presence" than the Veyron. For some reason, I cant get enough of it.

Bottom line is... If you are rich enough to buy a $1.4 million dollar GT car, chances are youre an uber-millionaire and probably have an F1, Enzo, Carrera GT and a host of other toys that would probably be better suited to track days

Funny you bring up the SLR McLaren, as I wasn't a fan of it.

UNTIL they brought out the 722 which is sexy as hell.

I love all the SLR's...its my favorite new car. Its so freaking sinister looking, esp in black...it looks like the batmobile or something. And the interior is so damn nice. Its just an amzaing car. Its almost as fast at the Ring as a carrera GT, and I would expect its a much better touring car. Its amzaing a big, automatic car handles and brakes like that SLR. Its rediculous.
They regular sAMG cars with that same basic engine are so easy to modify that I bet you could get a ton of power out of an SLR with a supercharger pully and ECM flash. I wonder if Renntech has mods for it LOL Not that I could afford one anyway Well, one day maybe.

That's like saying, why buy a Z06 when you could buy a Miata and use the extra 75k to mod it. You pay for the quality, heritage and styling second to none. I don't think SLR owners have to worry about their roofs flying off at 30mph...

Sorry, would never pay 1.5mil for a VW no matter how fast it is. Germans (VW) trying to pretend to be Italian (or French depending who you are talking to) = ugly.

Neither do Z06 owners since the Z06 is a fixed roof, thats the base C6 coupe with the roof issues which have been resolved and recalled.

There have been many other cases with the Z, including a video where a guy just leaned back and kicked it off.

Yeah it's kinda crazy and really shows that while it is a very affordable "supercar," you definitely pay the price when it comes to quality.

They veyron looks the way it does for aerodynamic reasons. I dont think its hideous...its just awkward looking.

The veyron isnt made to be an all-out track car. As a high-speed GT car, it is #1...nothing is even remotely close in performance.

I think some people get the point here... You can hop-up anything and make it perform well. These cars are about heritage, exclusivity and all-around performance.

Imagine if someone cracks the veyron's engine management and learns how to turn up the boost on that thing You know that if it makes 1000+ hp stock, its strong enough to make WAY more... It runs pretty mild boost stock...

I love how people here think that becuase the car is heavy, it will just automatically get it's ass handed to it on a road course. lol From the reviews ive read (since i obviously can't drive one) the car doesnt handle like a pig. Id like to see some laptimes for it. But i don't think that anything short of CCX, Enzo etc are going to "hand this car it's ass" on a road course.

Just becuase you have money, does not mean you have good taste in car. Taste is completly subjective. At this point in my life, if i were to buy an exotic, it wouldnt be the Veyron, I would never spend that much on a vehicle. IM just too tight with money. But i would not waste money on a W12 either, which i think would get out run by a Z06. Right now, id go for the Ferrari F430. Best, most well rounded, super car out there right now IMO. But i hope to at least get a 355 one day
