    Default wastegate problems....wtf?!?!?!

ok so on the way back from nopi, my buddy said his wastegate came off tore the head of the bolt off, and broke the flange. this is a TIAL wastegate. only at 10 PSI on a ls/vtec with spoolins old ram horn manifold. anyone have a CLUE what would cause this. we have had problems keeping the bolts on. came off on me one day while driving it, and use some loctite on the bolts. and this happened.

Most likely from severe vibration and tension. What else were you expecting?

The bolt was likely very stressed because of someone getting pissed off at it falling off before... so when they put it back on the torqued the hell out of it and busted weakened the head.. the combination of heat/vibration and weight on finally it broke it..

well it has been on for like about a month and a half. if it was due to severe over tq. then i would think it would have happened sooner. its not my car, so i dont know, the owner just asked me and i wasnt sure.

it was probably bc of vibration...you might wanna put some lock washers on it next time you put it on there.

not necessarily ... sometimes it has to do with the type of material that the bolt is made of vs the type of material that the manifold is made of. both myself and a friend used to run the ceramic coated inline pro manifold, and both of us had constant problems with bolts breaking or bolt heads breaking. we tried heat treated, high grade steel, etc. we just started keeping them on hand in the car.

we are thinking maybe the heat expansion and shrinkage properties of the two types of material cause this to happen.

thats true didnt think of that.

i know its annoying, and this time is causing him to get a new wastegate cause the housing is broken. it is working alright for now, but he wants it fixed when he goes in for tuning

it shouldnt be hard to fix .... go to a hardware store and buy a left handed drill bit. tap it, and drill it out .... and put a new one in

Honestly, I would never use locktite on a hot manifold/turbo bolt. Use a good crush washer...and fastener, and some anti-seize compound.
