thinking s2000-need opinions

i'm thinking s2000 again and seeking advice. it will be used, but don't know what to go with. i've found a '02 model w/ low miles in great shape, but i know the newer have more displacement. how is the '02 model? what would you go w/ and why? what should i consider when buying a used s2000?

i'm thinking a turbo will eventually find a home underneath the hood and me learning aem. consider this in your advice/comments as well.

here is the thing, the old model rev to 9K, and the newer model rev up to 8K, but more displacement is always good, considering u are going wit boost later. However the older ones are cheaper

From what I've heard... The later years of the s2k, they toned it down a bit to make it *less of a true sports car* and added more of a *daily driver* factor..... I guess what I'm trying to say is less of a need to rev 5-6k+ to get it going. But I've had no real world experience in niether.... I'd suggest you test drive both and see which fits you best.

Spoken like a true vDub owner! There is nothing more fun than some RWD, 9k RPM, and 50/50 handling! Oh yea, and not to mention Honda reliability.

the s2000 is a great car, but definately not something you want to get if power is important to you.. its not easy to make power out of that car N/A, and not exactly what i would instantly boost either. but it handles great, def pimp i beleive its close to 50/50 its more like 49/51.. regardless.. the only other factory cars out there that'll make you smile during turns like the s2000 are the RX8 and 350z, if you're a small guy and just want a great handling rwd 2 seater.. get an s2000

as far as 2.0 vs 2.2 i say go 2.2, there is no need for 9k in the 2.2, i beleive gearing is slightly different, 2.0's had better low end acceleration and the 2.2's shined a bit more up top. 2.2 > 2.0 on the road course

I have an AP1 like the 02. I prefer the 9,000 RPM over the AP2 (2004+). I've had mine two months and I absolutely love it. (Especially on those mountain runs)

I dig the S2000's. There is a larger variety of performance parts now, as compared to two years ago, and are easier to obtain. It was extremely difficult to find parts for me only 8 months ago, now there is a plethora out there. Check out modacar.com, lightningmotorsports.com, bulletproofautomotive.com, and hopupracing.com to see some options. There is a lot of stuff now available, I still can't find any pulleys.

I've driven both ap1 and ap2; obviously the more torque in the 2.2 ap2 model gives it a quicker acceleration but still, the ap1 is not that far behind and revs obviously a thousand rpms higher. Looks wise, I love both models but I think the ap2's factory wheels and lip kit etc looks even more aggressive than the earlier models. But an s2k is an s2k and I'd be glad with any model but if I had to finance something that new anyway, I'd go with 04+ (ap2) imo.

For all thats driven both the AP1 and the AP2, But am I crazy or is the cabin space bigger in the AP2???

btw the s2k is an awsome car but if u are a bigger guy its gonna be hell as a daily driver. i think it was made for guys that shop at A/X and wear calvin klein underwear.

Actually speedmonkey, the ratio is exactly 50/50 on some years, including 2002. I have a 2002 and most will agree that it is the best year model to grab if you have a choice. 2002 or 2003, arguably, have the best suspension set up (some say it gets softer as years go on), the best engine choice, the better options like glass window and wind deflector standard, also a few extras like component speakers in doors.
A lot of people will say there is a big difference between AP1 and AP2 power, but most of those are people who don't own one and most likely have never driven one. I would say that they are so similar that it would take a driver a long time before he noticed the difference between the two. The AP1 feels at 8k rpms like the AP2 feels at 7k rpms to put it simply. There is no way that .2 liters will make a huge difference like some might think. The AP2 engine only has about 9 more lb/ft of torque available than AP1. The same can nearly be said of hp.
As far as size issues go- I really can't complain. There is plenty of room for me. Of course, I weigh about 140 lbs. and my waist is smaller than 30 inches around... I am 6 ft tall, and can say that I never have headroom issues. I think the car is snug and fits the driver like a glove.
Bottom line: its a specialty car for a specialty person. If you are a large person, who wants a torquey V6 engine, lots of room and practicality, and a smooth and comfortable ride- STAY AWAY! If you like to be snug in your car, like tons of feedback from the road, like hearing your engine working, and like high revving and screaming 4 cylinders then get that 2002 as quickly as possible.
I think that any way you decide to go, you will be happy. Just don't get a Grand Prix White, and we'll be cool.

And as far as power increases go- most cars are not going to give you much until you do forced induction. I will say that when and if you do FI, the results will be more than sufficient to make you happy. I have driven a Comptech supercharged S2000, and it felt like a different beast.

I couldn't have said it better myself, but its not like Vtec is going to kick in at like 3k or something.

How much torque were you putting down with the supercharged f20c?
I think it is pretty well known that the S2000 is not a torque monster... so everyone can stop ragging on about that now.
