money is slim this days
anybody have any other opinions on turboing a motor of 200,000 miles????
you can do it if you want
a) to replace the motor
or
b) run the boost so low, there is no point of having spent the money on the turbo kit.
rebuild it man......dont swap it.....
uuummmmm. I would say..................hell no do not turbo it! If money is slim in the first place, I don't think you should want to turbo your car no matter how many miles it has on it. Turboing a car is no joke and you can just go ahead and assume that you will be breaking things once you do turbo. It's not like you just slap a turbo on a car and you're all good. It's a pretty intricate process with all kinds of unforseen circumstances. It takes constant maintenace.
we turboed a GSR DA integra (b17) with 204,000 miles on it last jan. The car had been METICULOUSLY maintained. It was very well kept. Still runs to this day.
if your car has regular maintanence (timing belt, water pump, rear main seal, etc) then it might be ok, but tracy has a point. be prepared for the unexpected. if TUNED right and if the motor is in good shape, then i say do it.
The lower the mileage doesnt neccesarily mean that it will be better for boost. we just had a guy turbo his brand new 5k mile ITR block, blew in less than 3months, which is common in the ITR/B16 motors cause of the weak pistons. But still, it didnt last and he was at 5k miles on a BRAND NEW ACURA SHORTBLOCK. shit happens.
so turbo it if its in good shape, but always be prepared to fix it or replace it. Do a leak down and compression test on it before you makwe your final decision

Exactly...not saying that it cannot be done. The thing that set off alarms in my head is that you said money is slim. From a shop owners perspective...this is the thing that will get you in the most trouble. You need to be prepared for unforseen circumstances. I have seen a lot of customers try to scrimp on parts and that's when the real problems come in. Sometimes it's best to go ahead and spend a little more money upfront to ensure that you are not going to cost yourself even more money in the long run.Originally Posted by vteckidd

thank u for the advice, i went to mainstream an got a leakdown and commpression test done i got the go ahead, but i might just build on it first vteckidd (mike) and save money the SAFE WAY!!!!!!!
stay all motor, thats the way. going turbo is expensive, thats why i have atleast 1g in my car fund account at anytime. I have spent that money 3 times and had to replace that 3 times to.
but can he build the motor up, basically replacing most of the main things in the engine, he should be ok right?? is it really smart to put a turbo on a stock motor period unless the motor was a turbo motor??

just buy a spare engine and leave it on the side that you know is running, turbo the car and if it blows, just get the spare and slip it in there..
id ont know how much a spare integra motor costs.. but if you didnt want downtime..
doesnt matter whether you boost an "indestructable" engine or a stock engine, if you dont have the tune down, its gonna blow eventually.
of course, the boost levels will be dramatically different from a stock and built engine.
running NA imo is more expensive.. (however, depending on what you mean by NA..)
yeah man thats what i decided to do for the future, i found and ls motor for about 750$ with about 75 000 miles on it. just might get it.
