    Default Turbo selection

Ok IA, I need some input again. I'm currently trying to piece a turbo kit together for my gsr, and am trying to select a proper turbo that will make efficient boost. Can anyone recommend turbo sizes for a HP goal of 300-350 Max? Also I've been told to only go with a vband downpipe flange. If I can't find a vband in the correct size turbo can anyone break down the different flanges and how to run them without problems?

    You can make your goal with a t3/t4, t3 60-1, or t4. A v-band isn't a must you could use a standard 5bolt.

I just keep hearing about issues with stripped bolts and leaks... is this common or preventable?

Use quality parts, high temperature rated bolts are a MUST, and never choose quantity over quality. These are very important rules to boost.

What's engine is this going with? 1.8?
I'm running a Precision 5431 CEA billet 50 trim, which is working out awesome. It's not super expensive, but is still a quality turbo, great for your goals. I'm pushing 9.5psi on a 2.5L making 308hp/314tq to the wheels.

Not sure about the honda world, but treadstone makes great kits (for my sentra at least). as long as you don't go cheap, not going with a vband set up shouldn't really be an issue.

    Just the turbo IIRC.

I'd recommend a 2860RS also. Good spool, great powerband, and can be had for a decent price. It's small but still a great turbo.

The 2860RS "Disco Potato" or the 2871R would do you well. I will be running a 2860RS with my H23A Blue Top by summer time.

The motor has been bored .020 over. I've been recently been looking at an hx30 or an h1c turbo. Anybody know how well these do on a b series?

Also... exhaust size... 2.5 inch or 3 inch? What will change between the two?

How much for the turbo? Isn't that a ball bearing turbo?

Ok IA I just picked up a holset hx30 turbo. This will be going on a 2.0 gsr, hoping I made a good choice for my goals of 300-325 who with a good power band. I am admittedly new to turbo, can anyone with some turbo experience tell me what I be just gotten myself into? Did I go too small, willl it spool too quick and Max out? FEEDBACK PLEASE

Whats your engine mods? I'm not 100% sure but I think that turbo is like the gt30r? I'm not very familiar with the holset turbos, I know they make great power though.

More engine info, and I'll look up the turbo and try to help you out.

I've done Arp head studs, rod bolts, block guard, valve springs retainers, and currently itr cams. I've been told to go back to gsr cams when I do boost though.

What makes your motor a 2.0 GSR? And who told you to go back to GSR cams? lol.. Let me guess, someone that has GSR cams trying to talk you into trading because you'll make more power on the GSR cams then the ITR's?

One thing you could do is compare the to on a dyno. But keep the ITR cams, they make more power easily. The GSR will make more midrange power, but as the looks of it your head will handle higher RPM's, so I'd defiantly stick to the ITR's most people make at least 20-40 WHP more with the ITR's.

Honestly I can't find much on the turbo you picked up so I'm kinda blind in this situation. From what I found online the hx35's and hy35's are making 300 with ease. Do you know the compressor size or the exhaust housing size for that turbo? Either way you'll be happy with a boosted motor regardless of how much power you make, even if you hit 300.. After a month or so you'll be wanting more.

The block had to be bored. .020 over. This is the logic that was given to me on the cams.. I was told that the itr cams have a bit of valve over lap, which is not a problem for n/a however on boost, some of the pressure that you're trying to use to creat e power is simply being blown straight through the motor if you have overlap.

Google ITR vs GSR cams dyno on boost. Look at other peoples dynos from just changing cams. Tons of power. Another thing is some all motor cams make more power than turbo cams. The skunk2 pro1's are great all motor cams but even better turbo cams. The best thing you can do is ask the person who's going to tune your car which they think will make more power. The turbo you have might blow hot air into the cylinders at higher rpms where the itr cams make power. But imo if you have both sell the gsrs for another upgrade you can do.

But just being .20 over isn't it still like a 1.8 still? I know 84mm is a 2.0 but you need to sleeve to go that far. That's what my LSV is at least. Maybe I'm just missunderstanding it. I suck at math anyways..

Alright lmk when you figure it out. No matter what though you're gonna make good power.

I dont know why but it is next to impossible to get specs on holset turbos. On the bright side I hear nothing but good things about holset turbos...

I took your advice on researching gsr vs itr cams and this is what I've found. Pertaining to a boost setup, the gsr cams are supposed to be better if you just slap them in, however if you have adj cam gears and a tune to eliminate the overlap, the itr cams will out perform the gsr's by quite a bit. Think Imma keep my itr cams and get some cam gears. Don't plan on boosting without a tune anyways.

And as far as the whole 2.0 thing, I really have no idea.. I've been advised that it would put me at 2.0 but I was thinking along the same lines as you, 84mm makes a 2.0 on a b20. Idk if its a stroke ddifference or what, but you're prolly right

running a disco now on my gsr....great turbo and will put you right in your power range. the 2871r will get you to 350whp more easily though

I still think it'd be a 1.8 imo, since the CC's on them anyways are like 1797 or something like that, just going .20 over really wouldn't even bump it to a 1.9 would it?
