Corvette ownership can practically become a way of life for some, providing a source of passion, pride in ownership and companionship with fellow Corvette owners that share the same interests.
GM realizes the extent of the cult following behind the Corvette, and now the automaker is going to allow customers to become even closer to their cars by allowing them to assemble their engines at the Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan. The option – which will run you $5,800 – will be applicable for orders on 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 performance models, allowing customers to produce their very own LS7 or LS9 motors.
“Corvette owners are some of the most passionate – and most involved – enthusiasts in the industry,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “The Corvette Engine Build Experience offers customers an unprecedented opportunity to participate, hands on, in creating the car.”
When a customer selects the PBC option for either a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1, a special Chevrolet concierge will contact the customer to verify participation and help coordinate arrangements. Although the $5,800 option does not include travel arrangements to or from Detroit, the Chevrolet concierge will help schedule the engine build, coordinate the customer’s activities at the Performance Build Center, assist with booking local lodging and meals and arrange local transportation.
Once arrived at the PBC, owners will assemble their engine while under the supervision of several skilled technicians to ensure the engine is built to spec. Once the engine production is complete the owner will be able to apply a personalized nameplate to the engine, next to their name. Then the engine is shipped off to Kentucky for the vehicle’s final assembly.
Chevrolet also reminds us that buyers can also opt for a tour of the Bowling Green, Kentucky, assembly plant, the ability to receive delivery of the Corvette at the Corvette Museum and Corvette ZR1 Driving School.
All engines produced under the PBC option program will come with a full warranty.
