They are great cars if well cared for. Check for crank snout and crank bearing failure on the 1.8 cars. Other than that, coilpacks are about the only thing that goes wrong. They are simple to work on too.

like tnomud said about showing their age, the paint for late model mazda's are crap. idk what happened but something went wrong in the factory

I hate 2nd gens.
Piles? Definitely one of the most reliable cars ever to abuse. I revved mine to 9k DAILY on entirely stock internals for over a year before it died.
