Thumbs up Hyundai delivers racer-friendly Genesis Coupe R-Spec

Hyundai is doing some big things. THe price of this car and the spec is simply incredible.

Back when Hyundai launched its Genesis Coupe last spring, the Korean maker announced that it would be adding another variant targeted specifically at the tuner crowd. As this is being written, the 2.0T R-Spec is being shipped to dealers and will have its official coming out next week in Las Vegas at the SEMA show.

The R-Spec cuts what is billed as "non-essential" convenience bits like cruise control, Bluetooth, the trip computer and steering wheel audio controls to cut both weight and cost. Since the R-Spec is targeted at customers that are likely to add some sort of body kit anyway, no rear wing is installed, either.

On the other hand, it includes all of the good bits from the track pack like the 19pinch wheels, Brembo brakes and Torsen limited slip differential. R-Spec models are available only in white, red and black with the 2.0-liter 210 turbo four banger. It goes out the door at a relatively modest $23,750, leaving both racers and Hot Import Nights guys and gals with a bit of cash to spend on the inevitable upgrades. Check out the official press release after the jump for further details.

    PRESS RELEASE:

PRODUCTION R-SPEC TO DEBUT AT THE 2009 SEMA SHOW IN LAS VEGAS

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CALIF., OCT. 27, 2009 – The Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec, the perfect blank canvas for tuners, priced at $23,750 is beginning to arrive at dealerships across the country. R-Spec takes the core performance equipment from the 2.0T Track model and eliminates non-essential convenience equipment to reduce both cost and weight. The Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec – the first production R-Spec model to arrive in the U.S. – will make its world debut at the Hyundai booth at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in the Las Vegas Convention Center from November 3 – 6 (Booth # 24387).

The R-Spec allows enthusiasts to tune their own car to their desired specifications. R-Spec provides genuine track-readiness and powertrain scalability in an affordable model. The R-Spec adds core Track model performance equipment to the most affordable 2.0T model, such as: Track-tuned suspension, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with performance Summer tires, Brembo® braking system, Torsen® limited-slip differential and R-Spec badging.
In a special nod to tuners, R-Spec will also receive a set of front strut camber adjustment bolts (dealer installation - optional for customer to install) to further enhance initial turn-in and handling response. To reduce both cost and weight, the R-Spec eliminates some non-essential convenience equipment such as: Bluetooth®, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, chrome interior accents and steering wheel audio controls. Genesis Coupe R-Spec is priced $3,000 less than the 2.0T Track model, leaving tuners with extra cash for their own choice of aftermarket performance upgrades. Appropriately, R-Spec will be available in three exteriors colors most common among international racing teams: Karussell White, Bathurst Black and Tsukuba Red. R-Spec comes with manual transmission only.

    R-Spec equipment includes:
2.0-liter low-pressure turbocharged intercooled four-cylinder engine with dual continuously variable valve timing delivering 210 hp, 30 mpg EPA highway rating and a top speed of 137 mph
    6-speed close-ratio manual transmission
Electronic Stability Control with Traction control, ABS, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist
    19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with staggered-width high-performance summer-compound Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires (225/40YR19 front, 245/40YR19 rear)
Brembo® braking system with 13.4-inch ventilated front rotors, 42mm four-piston fixed front calipers (red), 13.0-inch ventilated rear rotors, 32mm+28mm four-piston fixed rear calipers (red)
Track-tuned suspension (higher-rate coil springs, higher-control shock absorbers, 25mm front stabilizer bar, 22mm rear stabilizer bar, front strut brace)
    Torsen-type limited-slip differential
    R-Spec badging
    Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Front, side, side curtain air bags
    Active front head restraints
    Driver's lumbar support
    Air conditioning
    Remote keyless entry system
Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
Power windows (one-touch up and down), door locks and mirrors
AM/FM/XM/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers
    iPod/USB/Aux jack connectivity
    Projector beam headlamps
Lightweight temporary spare with aluminum wheel (T135/80D18)
Note: Automatic transmission not available with R-Spec

I think for being the "R-Spec" more "performance"-specific model, they sure as hell are lacking on HORSEPOWER.

    GEEEEEEEEEEZ.....for a turbo 4 cyl, 210 is a joke! You're talking roughly 180 actual RWHP. That's just crummy, IMO.

I suppose once the aftermarket availability opens up more for the Genesis to include, but not limited to: turbo manifolds, upgraded/modified ECU's, and various other piping/plumbing kits...then it will be worth it.

the ecu's with the car is so easy to crack. hyundai has already stated they made the car like that so it would be open to being modified.

210bhp is factory rated. i say with an upgraded front mount and a good tune. you could see the power somewhere around 300hp. hyundai wants the car to be modded. they want to see what other people can do with it. hence the ecu being easy to tune. a lot of companies like the other guy stated, have parts for the car.

edit, thats just with the 2.0t base model.

there's a RRM timing module waiting to be released after SEMA. Word is this little bugger add 34hp/30lbtq. 2 Genesis 2.0 have it installed and they cant stop talking about it. The ECU Reflash from PowerAxel, is nuts. Some have recorded on dyno getting 207whp/257tq STOCK to 231whp/312 with supporting mods. To me Hyundai made the Genesis like shit so you can play with modifications. Who cares if it's slow from factory? Have you seen how much room you have to play in? The engine bay was made for V6 not a 2.0 so you have this huge gaping space where the turbo is.

    Here's a supercharged V6 making 438WHP. Not too shabby.
Forged pistons and a Rotex Supercharger.

May want to wait another year to pick one up. This first year of Genesis Coupes has been having tons of build quality and mechanical issues. Hyundai seems to be putting fixes out as problems arise for the most part. But, there seems to be an unusual amount of issues.

hey the tibs not bad.The only thing really weak in the motors is the bottom end.The head should handle 400. But i am liking these new gen's
I check sluts off my list like a maintnence man
I drive a low is3 just so it gives me a reason to drive super slow on these rough ga roads.
