    Default importing from japa!

i am looking at a few cars in japan like a 4 door skyline??

i am wondering if it is all bullshit i found a site that has freight charges to jacksonville fl. and a list of cars they have or can get????

there is a skyling 4 door for $1800 usd

a gts skyline 2 door manual for $2800 usd

and then it says the freight charge is $3422 usd and a $300 sur charge

then what would it be to legalize it??

    just need a direction here!

I would do a lot of research before spending money on a venture like this.

you CANNOT legalize a skyline in the us. the only way ive seen it done recently is through a company called kaizo, and they ship it here with no engine/drivetrain so it can be registered as a kit car. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

and how many of these were ACTUALLY IMPORTED over the past year or so? not many. it used to be easier to get away with it, but now alot of the cars that were registered using loopholes and other semi-legal methods are being seized. most commonly r34s.

    True true.

The best thing to do if you really want one is to find one thats already here and is actually legal. That way you dont have anything to worry about.

Not true, the feds can seize a skyline and crush it anytime...no such thing as a legal r34 in this country, nor r33 for that matter.

No there isn't. The Skyline is FEDERALLY illegal even if you have it tagged and insured by the state. There is a small handful of R33's that are 100% legal that went through the process via Motorex, then 17 of them were NOT put to the required standards and the DOT caught on. Not only did they do that but they were also misrepresenting the R34 as the R33 and eventually their DOT registration to convert cars was revoked.

Ironically the DOT, EPA, and NHTSA override the state...imagine that, the federal government overrules the state. The Skyline is on the federal DO NOT import list. It's only a matter of time before each Skyline owner is caught. They have been repossessed by US customs before and they will continue cracking down.

    More info here http://skylinegt-r.wikidot.com/0-60mrex

I'm still trying to get all the low down on Kaizo's kit car approach.

    http://www.kaizoindustries.com

If you have $65k to drop down on a R34 shell then call them and ask for Daryl. They are processing the Skyline unibody just like the Noble, Cobra's, and Ariel Atoms that were imported from Canada. It gets a VIN plate like a home built trailer and a VIN assigned by the DOT...you then put whatever power and drivetrain in it that you want.

There are various loopholes and whatnot in the system, but as for any Joe Schmoe just bying a car and having it shipped over, it's not happening. Though there is a small bit somewhere in the NTSBs site about some cars that can be brought over with a minimal process.. but the Skyline is NOT one of them.

    ^^ tr00f.

your only hope to have anything other than a r32 is to buy one thats already "legal", and hope it doesnt get crushed. if its an r32 your after, thats no big deal.

i say you stick with cars that are 100% legal and american titled, you would be fucked the first time you got pulled over in any car like that.

ive seen your civic, and your pockets are NOT deep enough.

and another thing. go back and re-read the posts you have made in ANY thread on here. i have to read the bullshit you spew AT LEAST twice to figure out wtf you are trying to say. and youre calling ANYONE in this thread dumb? LOL

before you start acting like you know shit about this, remember that you started a thread asking if anyone knew any details about importing cars. i have done a good bit of research on this and know that you CANNOT import any skyline other than a r33 and have it 100% state and federally tagged and registered. and even then, you better have some deep fucking pockets.

other than that, all the details i was gonna post have already been posted by speedminded.

$3400 for shipping is way overkill. It should be less than $1000.

maybe for like a 5 ft container!!!! hahahahaha

a 20 foot container being shipped to jacksonville florida is 3400 versus shipping to la which is 3200

and i am trying to find a 4 door skyline turbo manual thats hard to find over here!!!

i can get r32 skylines all day over here for less than 20k gts for 13k and 3 gtr's for 19k

Yes that price is correct BUT you also have to pay the dock in Japan to load the container on the ship...then pay the dock in the US to unload it. Roll-on Roll-off if the car is drivable cost about that but you're looking at a minimum of $1,200 to deliver it in a container after port fees.

heres a complete list of cars elidgable for importation. some ppl still seem to think the skyline is illegal when its not.

th r33 are the only ones you can import and legalize. motorex only presented crash testing for the r33, so thats why its legal.

you can join the military( not a bad idea right now) and bring whatever car you buy overseas back over. doing it this way, the car doesnt come to a us customs port, which is a plus, then you can registre it in fl "some way".

    heres that list for you

Key word, "legalize". You are correct but the process to legalize the R33 is extremely expensive.

I seriously considered bringing over a Toyota Altezza RS200 Z Edition about 6 years ago and the cost to "bring up to US standards" was $35k then, not including the car itself or shipping it over.

I think the military loop hole only pertains to vehicles over 25 years of age otherwise you have to bond the vehicle and it can't be sold and has to go back in 2 years. It's been years since I read up on it though and my info could be as much as 10 years old.

yeah if you go the military route, you cant seel it, and it can be any year, you have to be deployed for 140 or more, or out to sea for 120 days or more. i;m join the army right now and i've been doing hella research just incase i want a stagea.
the 25 year rule pretains to all jap import cars in general. like next year, all 84's (ae86) imported from japan can be legalized without emmissions upgrades and will automatically fall in epa standards

I though the kit car approach is the only way of getting a overseas car over here legally and then the car has to be brought here completely stripped. I know that process for getting skylines over here has been going on since I looked into it back in 03

thats basically the process that Kaizo goes through, except they do all the pain in the ass stuff for you. you pay them for a stripped down rolling shell and it gets registered as a kit car. then its up to you for engine/drivetrain.

although importing a skyline would be nice, its a big hassle and price tag. It was wonderful when full race came out with their R14 swap. Skyline power and drivetrain without the hassle.
Just curious though, do importation laws fare the same as say "antique" car laws. My buddy was looking at a 72 skyline to import. In an essence, couldn't you easily import and legalize a vehicle of this age?

You CAN have a R32 or anything else STATE legal, and even INSURED as a Skyline. There are ways.

BUT who the FUCK wants a non GTR Skyline? All that is is a RHD heavy even slower 240SX.

Yes, over 25 years is much easier. That's why people import the Land Rover Defender and register them as the older Land Rover Series model.

Yes you can insure and title just about anything in Georgia but the car is not federally legal. Only the R33 is eligible for legal importing but it still has be brought up to DOT, EPA, and NHTSA standards. Any R32 or R34 can be confiscated and either put on the boat or crushed, doesn't matter if it's got a tag and insurance or not.

Not always. I know quite a few state registered cars that are even far more "illegal" then a Skyline and never have problems in GA.

Hell, I will sell you a 240 for $50, with VIN, title, and all. Swap all VIN plates, use that title, "officer it's a Skyline body." Cop would NEVER know. (Serious on the $50)

There are couple of ways to do this. LOL

One is the kit car way: You can do this your self with out the market up. You just got to get the car shipped through a kit car company, Who then Prices the the car in parts. Charges you seprate for the motor tranny and Body. This has to be done through a KIT CAR COMPANY. IT CAN NOT BE DONE BY JOE WHO LIVES IN JAPAN. There are a couple of companies that are in japan that are galdly to help you out. IF you read the import laws it state something about motor matching other bs. Anyways then they ship it to you. You then get the car shipped from the dock to garage or home and put it back together. Then Resigter it as a kit car. Then you can get it insured. THAT LEGAL. 100%

The other way to it is to buy a shell in japan, Then Buy the motor and tranny some where esle like in the states. No matching motors no problem. You can get this State Legal.

Then there is the very illegal method which simmon said. LOL
Now I have a friend how did this, With M3 E36 GT. He now in Jail. So If your going to do something stupid in it I would not recoomend it at all. Switching VIN with another vechile is another way to do this. Yes avg joe won't know, But if they have to inspect your car. Your car your fucked. Like inspect meaning like put it on the lift search for envance for a crime.

There are a couple of more. But I got to get back to studin
