Default Jan Magnussen at the wheel of a ZR1: Drops 'Ring time by 4 secs to 7:22.4

    Autoblog:

Back at the Nürburgring, the hot Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 has just ripped four seconds off its claimed 7:26 lap. The new time, with Jan Magnussen at the wheel, is a claimed 7:22.4 for the full 12.93-mile loop. While the number is pretty bloody fast, it is still .3 seconds off the time earned by the Dodge Viper ACR (ouch, those three tenths really have to hurt!). We take these lap times with a grain of salt, as we've yet to see everyone on the 73-turn course under the same conditions, and with officially certified timing equipment. Again, so you don't have to Google the competition's best-claimed Ring times yourself, here they are: Porsche GT2 - 7:32, Nissan GT-R - 7:29, Corvette ZR1 - 7:22.4 and the Dodge Viper ACR - 7:22.1.

Jan is the man. Remember that Z06 run he did?

That's pretty impressive. But I have officially lost all faith in the significance of Ring times.

Nice! Now they need to retest the GTR so they can drop it out of the top five.

I haven't. Anyone that knew the track well before this all stated happening will respect it.

I do believe that a better driver is the real difference but still impressive non the less.

I really don't know all the ins and outs of 'Ring testing. I just know there's many different circumstances under which cars are tested. If there was a standard method of doing it then I would put in a lot more faith.

Impressive but without video proof and an overview of the car (i.e proof it was on factory tires and factory everything) it's just a number to me that means it's capable of going fast..

    Its pretty simple really.

    1. Street tires.
    2. Cross the line
    3. Do the lap
    4. Finish over the line.

    Factors:

weather: To say this is changing is stupid because how do you expect to have exact same conditions over an 7-8 mile loop?

Traffic: You can pay for the track to be closed off.

Everything else is what gives the Northloop its charachter as a public toll road.

There are certain things in this world that tuner fans will never taint and the Nurburgring is one of those things.

They last vid was there and there's no reason it will be different this time. You gotta call them true onit since Yan is the best Corvette driver in the world.

    Sorry Johney O'Connell, It's true.

I thought there were more issues of how the laps are taken. Like if they get the time from a standing start or not. Regardless that's a damn good time.

There are no standing starts. You cross start/finish with the speed you carry out of the final right hander.

I'm not saying its not true. They need to film the tire and say this is the TIRE. then film the brake pad and say....THIS IS THE BRAKE PAD USED..Film the suspension, brake fluid..everything then immediately head out there with SAID car. Namely Nissan needs to due this...
There are so many variables that could dramatically change the time that they are not mentioning. For example, after about 3 laps at my cars maximum potential on Road Atlanta the stock brake fluid is SHOT and I start loosing slight amounts of time..... I gain seconds after laps from just a slightly more aggressive pad (i'm not talking my race pads), seconds from more aggressive street tires etc. etc. etc. The smallest things make the biggest difference when you run flat out for longer than 1 minute, especially on a 8 minute track and I just don't buy into it because I.M.O it's NOT documented properly. It means nothing to me. I think any club racer, instructor or pro driver would have something to say about that as well.

This hopefully will put to rest the idea that Porsche somehow has proven that the GT-R isn't as fast as Nissan says it is around the ring. Obviously a good driver makes all the difference. I wish Jan had beaten the ACR...then again, I really prefer the ACR over the ZR1, so it's just me liking Jan that causes that.

PS: OnUrLeft, I'm not sure there ARE more aggressive street tires than what are on the GT-R/ZR1/ACR. The GT2's Pilot Sport Cups are pretty good too, for french crap.

But we are getting to levels where these cars are capable of doing hard driving for over 8 mins. I feel like throwing racing brake fluid into a car is not cheating. It is just being smart. There are things that are on the street that need to be changed when one goes to a track day. The pads are a throw up. For those of use that have cars like M3s, Stis, or just the above average street car, yes pads are necessary but for a car with as overhauled of a setup as can be found on a zr1/ACR. I feel it can take it.

The documentation. I feel a list of the parts would be good at the begining or at the end for a reminder. But actually disecting every possible component is a bit much. I think the setup the best motoring vids use is good enough. It is quick and wont take away to much from the lap video.

Yeah. It's just my opinion. There are so many variables that I see at the track with street cars and through club racing it's just a stretch for me personally to believe someone did this, in that, with this ..... Car companies are using the ring for marketing because they know enthusiasts follow and listen to times on it.
If they don't overview the entire car, as I would if i were trying to prove something, then I just see it as a number. You can benefit so much from the smallest upgrades.

The biggest factor is still the man behind the wheel. Everything else just builds confidence. But as i have stated earlier. The ring is not a fad. The big german manufactuers have been using it for testing since it was created. Japan and America began to use it in the mid 90's. It is only of late it has grown so popular because more people know what the ring is. The same couldn't be said 10 years ago and manufactuers still went there.
