just like i'd rather have rotas/knockoffs before spending $3k on baller rims just because other people will be impressed. they're DD rims. they're going to get scruffed.

But at the same time, people flip out when they see flashy painted rotas or anything with a polished lip. For me personally, the reason why I would (and will, when it comes time to buy wheels) get authentics is because there IS a difference in quality and integrity between the authentics and knock-offs. That is something I personally value, you may not and that is okay. Just like you said...preference.
