Default Lexus tops J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study for 14th straight year.

    Autoblog...

J.D. Power and Associates has just released its 2008 Vehicle Dependability Study that attempts to measure vehicle quality throughout the first three years of owning a vehicle, and for the 14th year in a row Lexus leads all manufacturers with a rating of just 120 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). This year's runner up, surprisingly, is Mercury, though it's a distant second at 151 PP100. Cadillac (155 PP100), Toyota (159 PP100) and Acura (160 PP100) round out the top five spots for brands. Lexus also had the most segment leaders with six vehicles leading their respective category, while Toyota tacked on another five. The study also says that long-term vehicle quality has also improved 5% across the industry in 2008, with the industry average dropping 10 PP100 down to 206 this year.

The Vehicle Dependability Study is based on surveys taken of 52,000 original owners of 2005 model year vehicles. Take whatever stock you will in it, as some argue that subjectivity can skew the results. For instance, Lexus owners may tend to report that their vehicles are running just fine out of pride and loyalty to their brand. Nevertheless, J.D. Power's complete press release and results for the industry and each segment category can be found after the jump and in the gallery below.

Wow they have a pretty big gap between the rest too, wasn't expecting that. Too bad Chrysler ruined Jeep so much and now they're so far down.

No, they actually had a huge leap up on the board. Went from 252 to 193

But don't forget they are #1 on the initial quality study for 3 years in a row.

funny. One of our lexus' leaked oil from 110k on and would've needed a fresh head gasket or just another motor to stop the leak. The tranny was replaced twice, never shifted smooth and the car was on the verge of comepletely exploding by 170k (dropped compression, valve knock). My cosins RX had the tranny replaced and still has issues and our other LS had tranny replaced early, gauges never work right and has electric issues (but runs great). The LS V8 4.0 liter is bullet proof and will go to 350k easy if driven properly but most of the drivetrain on pre 03 lexus' from our families experence is less than good and we are VERY good to our motorized things (we have a 350 ski boat with over 2000 hours on it in mint condition..
Currently grannies RX330 is holding up but it only has 40k, but our 5 speed IS300 has an internal oil leak and drinks about a court or more ever 1k miles and it absolutely cannot be fixed according to our techs without a replacement motor. We also spent 2k on this p.o.s trying everything to get it to stop and hundreds of other $$ to get other things fixed as well as hours of our own time.

This is coming from someone with over 6 Lexus' in the direct family in the last 3 years, and 4 currently. The number is getting smaller thank god.

Lexus is not perfect, there are bad Lexus and the rare lemon. They never scored 0 with defects. However, they are clearly BY FAR the highest quality vehicle you can own. If I told you about my buddies with problems in their BMWs, I would be writing this post for years.

No they are great cars, just things that break on them should never break and things that break on our german cars are very annoying but simple fixes from my experience. Typically our BMW's and Audi's soul (drive train/motor) will last forever. I can't tell you how many BMW's we've owned with over 300k on the drive train/motor. Not to mention some of these have seen lots of track time. On the other hand our RX is on its second transmission, our 75k 5 speed IS300 (which is a badass car) already needs a new motor to be problem free and our GS was literally about to crumple apart, it felt so like driving grandpa around. However, most of the electrical stuff stayed in tact and it was a descent beater after 10 years of ownership (and the A/C owned that of our 535, E30's etc.) but felt as if you were driving a beater versus a classic that'll still run as hard and take a beating as much as it did when it was brand new. This is just I.M.O. You could say between me and my family have owned atleast 6 of each make in the last 10 years so I speak from experience..and yes I drive with a lead foot, and expect my cars to put up with a session at the track during quiet time or some ass hauling on the way to the lake
