Thread: dumptube open losing power?

  1. #1

    Default dumptube open losing power?

as of now i have an open wastegate dump tube.its dumping right under the radiator/fans.
Not only do i hate the sound when it opens but also as soon as im at 7psi,i feel like i lose power, car dosnt bog down or anything it just isnt speeding up as fast as when the turbo is still spooling before the 7psi open mark..
it fully spools around 4k/5k depending on the load im putting on it

will i gain anything if i go get it ran back into the exhaust, or will i just be spending money to lose the sound?

if it dumps under the engine, you will only lose horsepower by directing it into the exhaust. you will lose a few ponies because the exhaust flow will be interuppted when the wastegate opens. it would not be beneficial however, if the dumptube was somewhere near where the turbo could suck in the exhaust coming out of it. where is the inlet on your turbo compared to the dumptube?

its not near the turbo, and it has a filter over the opening on the turbo. a good 12"+ away from each other.

the filter doesnt matter too much in this scenario, it can still suck in burnt gasses. you probably wont gain anything by putting it into the exhaust. well it would make you happier so you dont have to hear it...

a buddy tried both ways on his car he lost a little power when he had it dumping into the exhaust and got the power back when it just dumped under the engine. he also dumped it in front of the turbo and picked up 4 or 5 to the wheels if i still had the graphs i would post them

Care to explain to me how sucking in extremely hot air is going to help performance? Because what your saying (in my interpretation) sounds like the dumbest thing I have heard in a while!

i also thought you lose power when it opens because your only running off 3 exhaust ports not unless your wastegate is in the middle? mines in the middle of the 0-00-0/3rd and last one ->over

not only that, it would be injesting non-oxygenated air=not good for combustion.

dump below the car/engine or plumb back into the exhaust near the end of the downpipe/cat at a shallow angle (this will prevent any large power loss).

Just look at the pro cars, they all have them dumping under the engine. Must tell you something!

it takes more flow than you think to max out 2.5" exhaust, unless your pipe is maxed out you don't stand to gain much w/ an open dump. If you can use the dump to add volume into the main exhaust pipe at a higher velocity than the gas in the main exhaust pipe you'll accelerate the main exhaust stream and create a pressure differential.......................

depends on how much exhaust you have to flow, how big your piping is to begin with, and how well the size of your wastegate is matched to the size of your turbine, it's just another part of optimizing a setup/system. Most mild street setups running a 2.5-3" exhaust and low boost will benefit from a well placed recirc, 20-40psi, dump to atmosphere, it's too much volume to add back into the exhaust.

I run my downpipe and dump tube both into the inlet of my turbo... that way I'm recirculating the airflow and velocity of the exhaust gases straight back into my turbo for even more spool and power. It's gangster, you should try it.

What Big J is saying is partly correct. You're not really going to "gain" any velocity by running it back but you're not going to suffer the loss of velocity down the pipe by not having it there. Too many people run too big of an exhaust and it does affect horsepower. On turbo engines its not as severe as an NA motor but its still there. If you run the dump far enough down the DP, at least 12-14" or more and merge it at as shallow of an angle as possible you can lose the "fart" sound as you call it without any real loss in power. In 99.9% of turbo setups though you will always make more power with a divorced wastegate setup but you have to deal with the noise. As for it running on 3 cylinders, it doesn't really work that way unless you have a twin scroll manifold which in that case your manifold will have a better designed wastegate supply. The turbo sees so much flow/pressure, if you bleed off from pretty much anywhere in the system it will work the same with minimal differences. It sounds like you need to plumb the dump back in as the noise seems more important than the few HP you'll lose in doing so.

so it's like twin charged, turbo AND direct exhaust injection
