Default Mazda Millenia. Thinking about buying?

Looking for a DD with some extra amenities. My mom had a Millenia the first year they came out and I love that car. Thinking about buying one up until 1999, don't really care for the stying after that. I know the Millenia's had transmission issues but wanted to get some opinions or reviews from owners, former owners.

good cars... i have noticed alot with dead transmissions. But they are very reliable other wise. Id stick to the Kl 2.5 v6 ones, and not the miller cycle motors in the S model, they arent fun to work on. i was about to get one once, but i thought they were bigger inside..

Thanks JITB. Yes apparently Mazda had an issue with the tranny on that car. Ironic though because that engine was used in the MX6/Probe and the MX3. I definitely was staying away from the Miller motor. I just want something luxury, A/C a must, and I figure even if high miles as long as it last 2 years then I am good. I could always swap in another engine/tranny. Well with a family that bigger space is much needed my 8 y/o is pretty tall so this would be good. Thanks.

the mx3 used the K8 1.8 v6.. The mx6/probe used the Klde 2.5 v6. Alot of parts interchange on them, but they are different obviously.

the distributor on the K motors is another bad arear for the motor.. they go out alot..and prematurely. But there is fixes to that. Good cars tho.. pretty cheap nowadays too.

I think 100% of auto 626 trannys failed by now, pretty soon you will not see any 626s on the road.

I would say NO to the Millenia though!

Yeah, I actually forgot where I read not too long ago about the overheating issue as well. Have to rethink.

the 626/probe/millenia Auto V6 trannies were the worst ever, and were almot guranteed to break @80-100k... So if i find one with over 100k, that moves it pretty much has a new or rebuilt tranny in it.

The Kl motor was mazdas best motors.. they are plenty reliable.. But the rest is so so...

They were nowhere near as bad as the CD4E found on the 4cyls. It's rare if I've read about a auto V6 going bad at 100K.

There are plenty of LX-V6 and ES models left. The DX and LX 4cyl automatics are the ones disappearing.

I'm not sure. I do know they are poorly designed and it causes them to easily overheat. There were many attempts for Ford to do a recall but they were unsuccessful.

Ford's CD4E was found on 94+ 2.0L 626s, MX-6s, and Probes. The 93 2.0L and all the V6 models had Mazda designed transmissions.

Naw Kev. We bought her an SRX(she loves that truck) so this is strictly for me.
I thought about a 626 but back in the day when my mom was getting her Millenia serviced. She had a 626 and the car was boring to me. No offense to 626 owners but the car just didn't have any personality. Now the new 6 is different. I really like that car.

The automatic cars are real boring to me and I don't like them either. So no offense taken. But the manual cars are full of life, let me tell you. It's one of the more underrated cars on the market. Decently geared transmissions with quite a bit of pep. That's why I've owned 4 so far. I'll be buying another fairly soon if my money's looking right. I'll take either 4 cylinder or V6. I'm content with both.

    K series 626. That's right. It's got a K in it.

I shall look at the 626. Read a review on consumerguide.com and seems to be the underrated one.

Exactly. That CD4E is a piece of crap. We are not carrying anymore of them. Even a rebuilt unit is a shot in the dark.

NOt much, really. Just the wiring harness, MX3 control arms & axles and while you're at it, install the MX3 instrument panel. They'll never see it coming.

OK, so that I make sure I am understanding correctly. The 4cyl with the automatic is no good. V6's with automatic are doable but 5spd. would be better. Oh and let me know if you know anyone selling. I am checking trader and craigslist now.

Niether automatic transmissions are properly geared for the engine. If you were to get the auto, every time you shift it falls out of the power range. It really does suck. I have a '97 626 ES V6 auto and it's gearing sucks. Badly. But it's nice as hell. Silver leather with low miles (67k FTW) I'm just trying to work out all the bugs. My '94 626 V6 on the other hand....
