    Default salvage/rebuilt title question

looking at possibly picking up a shell... carfax shows it was in an accident in Dec 2002 and was issued a salvage title to a new owner in Feb 2003... 3 owners since then and multiple updates to the title. At some point it was repaired cause body is fine currently. Current owner says it was registered and tagged until a few weeks ago when he stopped driving it. im assuming its a REBUILT title since its been tagged and all since the salvage was issued (doesnt it have to be rebuilt before it can be tagged?) but Carfax doesnt specifically mention a rebuilt title. Can somebody clear that up for me?

also regardless of whether its salvage or rebuilt, what kind of problems might this present when i register/tag it?

Look at the title and it should tell you if it is rebuilt. It will specifically metion *REBUILT on there and you can not miss it. Carfax will only mention "salvage history". Since it has had owners after the accident, chances are it is rebuilt because most of the reportings done to carfax are through emmision tests.

seller mentions that the title doesnt say anything of the sort - rebuilt or salvaged. . he thinks maybe the requirement for the title to say REBUILT started recently. Hes in Rome and mentioned that inspection isnt required there.

one thing that does throw me off is this sample carfax specifically mentions rebuilt... ugh. this is getting confusing.

writing "rebuilt" on the title didn't start until fairly recently. EMISSIONS inspections aren't required in rome, of course, but DMV inspections are required, and if the car is lisenced or titled currently, it definitely had one.

Look at the tittle when you go and see the car...

If the tittle says salvage you must get it inspected and cannot be registered without this.

If the tittle says salvaed-repaired you may register it without no prolem.
