we have any mark5 gti's on the forums? im really looking into buying an 06 or 07
and would like to hear some owners thoughts on them

also this car will be used for dd\ autox whenever i can make an event

also how is the aftermarket? what mods do respond best to?

to be 100% honest, i lost a lot of love for the GTI's with the MK5's. mostly because of appearance but also the fact that the GTI's keep getting bigger and bigger. the motor is good and there is a lot of stuff out there for it. the 2.0turbo is a solid motor. with new software from GIAC the 2.0T can be a real runner. for everyday driving and the once in a while autoX the car is def a good choice. the new GTI's are pretty expensive though. but for aftermarket parts for a GTI i would check out VWvortex.com and look through there. they have tons of info on the newest parts for the new GTI's

...Why? The mkV is about as "vanilla" as a VW can get. Besides being a performance oriented 2.0 Turbo FWD car, it's basically just like any other Hatch on the road. This whole "OH EM GEEZE German cars are EXPENSIVE to FIX" line is a little ridiculous. Any engine that's specifically designed for performance driving is more expensive to maintain properly, but proper maintenance provides pounds of fun for a very long time. Talk to the Rotary guys if you don't believe me about that.

I work in the service department at a VW dealership. The new GTI's are probably the least problematic new vehicle VW makes. I have driven both the new GTI in many forms and the old and new R32. I would honestly take a 4 door DSG GTI over a new or old R32. You can chip them to make more power than an R32 and with a sticky set of tires I am pretty sure you could rape one on the track. I say go for it. Great cars and will probably be the next vehicle I purchase.

any gti will have lots of aftermarket parts...its like the civic in germany, everyone has one. and its also the number one tuned german car. I have driven an 06 mk V. The 2.0T motor is great, much better than the 1.8T. But i dont like the chasis, its a good chasis but its too big and heavy just like any other new car.

Id say the new GTI isnt too bad of a vehicle compared to the problems they have had with the new models and engines. Thus coming from a VW Tech, i have had the luck of a new GTI with a 2.0T come in with a lifter issue, once the valve cover was pulled, come to see the rocker arm had fallen off of its proper location and was just flopping around in one little part of the head, nothing else was damaged. Thats the worst problem ive seen from them and that was only one, never seen it happen on another one. APR tuning also has a great kit out for them, kinda on the expensive side but they know what they are doing when it comes to software and such as that for VW.
