i really don know how it works, but it de-pressurizes the tank if you happen to get in a wreck or easy access to de-pressurizing the tank if the car catches on fire.

blowdown tube is simply a bypass, if your shooting nitrous and something goes wrong it acts like a check valve and just blows it to atmosphere as opposed to the motor etc

A blow down tube is required on any car running on a NHRA-certified track if the nitrous tank is located in the passenger compartment (i.e. - not isolated in the trunk).

The reason why is simple. Automotive nitrous is not like medical grade nitrous. If has sulfer dioxide in it, and will make your lungs feel like they are burning if you breathe it. Basically, on all bottles there is a pressure relief valve - usually set to about 3000psi. If the tank build too much pressure, the relief valve will open, letting the nitrous out (so the bottle doesn't explode from the pressure). The blow down tube is attached over the valve and routes the nitrous out of the passenger compartment usually to the underside of the car. If you did not have the tube, the nitrous would be release into the compartment, and you would probably find that it would be difficult to focus upon your driving.

Ask Sam Mahdavi what it is for. A couple years ago in St. Louis it was about 150 degrees and his popoff blew on a nitrous bottle, it busted his blowdown and shattered his back glass. I was pit'd next to him and it scared the crap out of me.

Exactly. His back window was shattered and it sounded like a shot went off. It's attached to the main valve as a safety release when the pressure gets too high. Sam's did because of the heat coming thru the untinted rear window. If you have the nitrous in the trunk by itself and you don't use a heater on it, you should be fine for street type use. The blow down is a must in the race car where there is nothing between the bottle and the driver, besides the fact that it's a race requirement.
