they can be built to be fast but does the engine's last long ?
those blocks are very strong. considering that it was taken care of...how many miles are on it?? you deff. need to ask them how often fluids were changed..including the tranny, transfer, and rear diff.. also see if the timing belt has been changed...the list can go on and on.....but for the most part they are stong engines... deff. worth investing in if in good condition..
timing belt a major one. taken care of they are real relailable
2010 Scion xB
does the engines in them over heat under pressure ?
sounds like some good things to look out for will see if i can find out some more info on the car and let yall know!
your not investing , your getting trapped in a money bucket . i have owned 3 dsm's . they break every week . and some pepople will come back and say not with the proper tune and build well i got my motor from ffwd.net and bg tuned it so ...... the rest is history.
They are good bang for your buck perfomance wise, but they can be money pits. I owned a 2nd gen and it definantly was a money pit. Nothing major ever went wrong, it was just little BS stuff. Nothing major will ever go wrong if you take care of it, but they can nickel and dime you to death. I know people that never had problems with them though, I guess it just depends. The 1st gens were better cars IMHO though. Better block, lighter, cheaper, and from all that i've seen more reliable.
How much you getting it for, and how many miles does it have on it?
my buddy got his 91 gsx for $600. Then he bought some kind of JDM motor for $1000. He maybe put 1000 into it doing some little mods, and maintainence. Just a 2.75in turbo back, 2g exh mani, and maf, and now his car runs high 13's in the quarter. And he drives it like a ricer every day.
subscribed bc I want a 94 Talon - using this thread just for info.

Well...here's my Ten Cents.
These can be extremely fun, fast cars. I know I love my 2g. First gens are really easy to get big power out of with turbo changes and boost increases due to the incredibly low factory compression, these things are built for big boost. ~8:1 isn't bad for factory CR. One of the weaker points on the early cars is the rear end and axles, most people upgrade to the later "4bolt" rear end due to bigger axles and better contruction. I'd also have a look to see if the timing belt and water pump have been changed as these are common to wear out, and most people change them at the same time. Overall, they're really good cars, like other people said though, things will go wrong with them, it's the nature of the beast, but usually it's minor stuff. I've had my 2g since september and have replaced the starter and it needs a clutch[the clutch is my fault...more boost plus 140k mile old stock clutch]. A couple great websties to check out are http://www.gadsm.org and http://www.dsmtuners.com
I have a 92 talon tsi awd. First off they are cheap to mod relative to other cars on the tuner scene. They will last as long as you prepare them for. You have to make sure that you do all your upkeep on them. If you don't they will come back to bite you. Theres people running 400 to 545 on a stock 6 bolt block ( 1g up to a june 92 model) I won't lie you will be putting money into. Just do the maintanence when you have the chance if you wait it will come back. As long as you take care of it. It will take care of you.

nice car in the sig by the way!!
The only problem with them breaking down is when people take the quick route. Also if the previous owner rag the crap out of it you need to really go over it with a fine tooth comb. I won't lie there have been things I have rushed through to get it done without doing everything right. Guess what my car took a crap on me. So now I'm making sure I do all the right maintanence. A major area to look at is the timing belt make sure its been replaced. Find out if the balance shaft belt has been replaced if not I would be saving your pennies. When i bought mine I was the third owner the original owner was a 50 year old man that never really drove it. He put only 40000 miles on it in the 8 years he had it. They next owner only put 30000 in the 6 years he had it. I bought it a year ago with 77000 miles on it. All the belts had been replaced. So I started modding it. Since then I've only had small issues such as brakes etc... your normal issues. The reason I said before i rushed through is I began modded without upgrading driveline ( transmission) when i had the chance now I have a broken 3/4 shift fork. My best advice go over every inch of it. If you buy it you will have some of the best days of your life. There are some stock people running low 13's just with a few secrets.

Mines my dd and I've only had a problem getting it back running one time and that would be right now with the whole transmission thing. The only reason for that is where I work screwed up my payroll so I have enough for bills right now. If your just going to do a few mods I would say go for it. I said I would only do a few mods but that all changed. Upgrading your turbo would be the last of your concerns the 14b is a strong turbo for what it is.

Do these cars come stock with a top mount or front mount or what intercooler?
They have a side mount, its located right in front of the passenger side tire. They are good for about 300 but thats pushing it they get heatsoaked pretty quickly. But you can upgrade the supra sidemount you just have to flip an end tank around. I upgraded to the front mount just recently. with the evo 3 turbo it got a lot hotter a lot quicker. Also I have bigger turbo plans in the near future. In fact as soon as it gets its tranny rebuild.
