    Default ROTA vs. Spoon

am i the only person on IA that doesn't really see why you would buy some spoon sw388's when the rota slipstreams look almost identical.

yes blah blah blah they are fake but they look identical and 97% of the people that buy them for weight reasons are never going to do anything worth the weight reduction of what?... 15lbs. that your gonna save.

in my opinion if you buy these you are just a whore... simple as that, because there are no major functional differences when your putting them on a 140hp civic.

don't get me wrong... i love me some JDM hottness and there are some situations in which fake or imitation wheels are absolutely awful so this debate should mostly go for this style wheel. and let's not too personal here

the pictures below are of the rota and the spoon... i think the big one is the rota and the small one is the spoon

alright well let the debate begin. in the words of MXC Challenge "LET'S GET IT ON!"

Spoon - one of the highest and greatest parts makers for honda ever... the wheels are known as SW388's or to the NON honda community the Desmond Regamaster EVO's. its a simple and great wheel to a JDM whore its like GOLD. it definately gets alot of respect from people not matter if they are rockin Volks/works/Advan whatever... the spoon is still like wow, you got SW388's? they are light and its a name brand thing in the end but honestly... i'd rather rock the ORIGINAL and ultimately the BETTER wheel.

Weight: 3.88 kg.... aka 8.55 pounds for 15's

Rota - the wannabe jdm... aka we copy every cool wheel design and sell them at more "tuner friendly" prices. i can't stand them, sure they don't weight as little weighing in at a stunning 12.3 pounds per 15" of rota grade metal... they are more appealing b/c you can get them in a variety of colors where are the Desmonds were offered generally in grey. i don't like rotas b/c i consider it cheaping out for what you "ultimately" want. but hey thats my preference... jdm, J-spec, OEM JDM is the way the car generally came and it was "down tuned, retarded, hated, shunned, and pooped upon" to come to america... so people going for the JDM status shouldn't rock these wheels... but if your going for a "JDM" look where you wanna buy things that are JDM style as opposed to TRUE JDM... then go for it... but truthfully... i cry everytime i see a riceboy with rotas and call them jdm....

I would get the Spoon wheels or the Regamaster Evo alternative.....

The argument has been made that ppl that buy the authentic wheels don't use them for the intended purposes but how many ppl rocking Rota's actually drive their car at track days?

IMO, ppl buy Rota's to emulate the "jdm look" but then are quick to point out the fact that ppl with the real deal wheels don't have them for the functionality when they are called out on having fake wheels.....

Nothing wrong with putting Rotas on your car. Of course anyone given the option of having either would choose Spoon. But not everyone has that much extra money. They could invest the extra into something else. If I had an S2000, I would get the Spoons, but I have a Civic, I would rather get the Rotas. But I don't have Rotas

I've seen more Rotas than all the name other brands combined... but then again, maybe because I only go to the el cheapo JDM emulation track days.

I actually could care less what types of wheels people buy or for what reason. It's about stopping the spread of misinformation and elitist attitudes.

i see your point if your just going for looks then go rota but if your going to autox or you race quite often then i would opt for the spoon ones. I actually was about to get the spoon ones about 2 months ago for a steal at 1k but as we all know things come up. I guess you could look at it like this when you buy stuff for your car.

everybody buys shoes right.... ok most of us dont run a 5k everyday but yet the airmax 95 is prob the hottest running shoe out. you could buy the pro keds one that looks just like it at your local walmart or you could shell out the 100+ bucks for the airmax just my .02 but i do see your point clean dodge

and the pic is a guy from Team-Integra.net's dragon run and they are real spoon wheels. I guess in closing its a do what you want to your car

PURE jdm, I totally agree with you on this, me and cleandodge have been debating this at work all day. I would rather ride on oem wheels than say i have rotas.

if it was for street use, i'd keep the rotas and save my money

for track use rotas aren't gonna be as strong so i'd take the real thing

im surprised more people haven't voted for "because they are still good looking wheels"

Every time someone posts up about the new wheels they just got, or what wheels they should buy, they always ask opinions about looks... not functionality.

what happened to just buying rims that appeal to you, who cares if its a knock off if it looks good to me, ill buy them, that and I'd kinda rather have the heavier rims so that I don't spin as much. Spoon is the **** btw, but I just can't justify 80% of their prices...its like buying mcdonalds over checkers, yeah its cheaper but its still good.

the spoon 15" and the rota slipstream(any size) look identical, except for the finish. The spoon 16" looks different from the 15" version and looks different from the rota all together. the little picture is what the 16" looks like. The wheels are forged metal. I wouldnt care to buy them either but they are a precision made wheel and people that take advantage of them do.

yeah actually you are wrong, the 16" doesnt have the holes between the lug nuts but the 15" DOES have the holes between the lug nuts, look it up. Rota made the 15" wheel to be identical to the 15" spoon.

Invasion of the JDM fanboys! The spoons are built nicer. The rotas still aren't bad. Get what you want to get. Don't get a wheel just because it will make jdm nut-huggers drool.

    ^ agreeeeeeed

and SW388s and Regamasters are fairly easy to come across, icbmotors has them in stock on a regular basis. If you want something that will make the HT boys flip their lid, try finding a set of Team Orange or Techno Phantom wheels.

You hit a pothole with a rota and it could break...so go spend another $100 on a brand new one. You hit a pothole with the spoon and it could bend, $100 to repair or $250-500 for another wheel (+s/h).

Other than the first batch of Subzero's made years ago how many people have seen a Rota break during normal daily use?

My cars a fake, a fake Type-R...shaved sides, ITR engine, etc...so why not fake wheels too

Um my friend Subzero did. We were in Cali and he was pretty driving aggresive so I was in shotgun and then BAM we hit a pot hole. Well the front was not right. Ya it cracked no more like broken. One side of the rim had this massive fracture. And were like ya that's toast. Threw on the spare and then be bought TE37.

Would you expect any wheel with a low profile tire to survive an impact with a pothole?

i have had a couple sets of rota slips and i know a guy with 15 spoons..side by side no one can tell the difference...the only difference i saw was i paid $500 shipped for the whole set-up and he paid $1400. if you need light wheels to make your car fast or make it perform then you didnt have a fast performance car to begin with.

I would never pay for real wheels on a car that I daily drive. I always find myself hitting potholes and curbs and whatnot. Its easier for me to just go online and order another drag or rota than me trying to find a replacement for a wheel that might take me 2 months to get. Plus i buy a new set of wheels every year so the knockoffs were better on my wallet.

That being said. I have bagan the hunt for a lightweight 8 in wheel for my car thats not a stupid 0 offset. I'm either going to have to go custom, or swap to 5 lug, both cost $$$$$$. More than likely I'm just gonna get widened steelies.

You will NEVER catch me with buster ass Rotas on my car. They are cast piles of garbage. I have seen many people bust a Rota when using their cars for anything besides parking lot "pimpin." I'll roll a 14" DA GSR wheel before I would EVER put a Rota on my car.

You buy cheap you buy twice.

    Pacific Rim sells them.

NAIZBST needs to get in this thread. He owns NOTHING fake. Advan, Mugen, JDM Enkei RS Tarmacs, etc. Hell, his Type R is a real deal RHD. He is more JDM than PureJDM.

damn his rich ass! in a case like that...of course theres no reason to throw some Rota's on there. im not expecting to sway someone in here to put rotas on a ITR or something. just your average joe (no pun intended JDMjoe86) putting some $1500 wheels on a daily driven car that will never see track time or a booth at a respectable car show is just ridiculous unless you just want to gain the illustrious whore status
