Ive driven several, and the shifts are just way to slow for any kind of spirited driving. Since there is no torque converter it does make for better power usage than an automatic though. And once its out of its 5yr/60k warranty the smt system is EXTREMELY expensive to repair..

Test drove one when I was looking for a roadster, it was godawful slow, shabby brakes, putrid looks and a boring interior. I was unimpressed with the car. Didnt care for the manumatic either.

yea,i that review it said they were tad bit slower than the normal 5 or 6speed...but still put down same numbers on the Dyno, since its the same gearbox..but i like the looks and u dont see many of them..but it will be step up over a auto,as u said

if i were to have a mr2 spyder it would definately have to be a manual trans and would be in consideration for a 2zz swap from day 1

I am pretty sure when Car and Driver tested the car when it first came out it did 0-60 in 9 seconds. I would have to agree that is pretty godawful slow.

    0-60 in 6secs with 5speed
    0-60 in 7 secs with 6speed SMT

still not to bad for a 130hp engine, dont really want a drag car,i want something fun in the twisties, and this is one of the best at it for the $$

It's okay I guess. I had an old girlfriend that had one. The handling of the car was good, but I hated the interior and the SMT felt like a toy that would snap off in my hand. How much are these cars going for?

I have driven the SMT as well as owned a 5 speed MR2 Spyder. The SMT is cool. The upshifts are very slow. Don't know if anyone has messed with the tranny computer to make them quicker or not. The downshifts are very nice. Very nice car, lightweight and handles great!

To my knowledge they have made programs for BMW's steptronic. I have yet to see it for any other makes though.

    No sorry needed.

Did the GLI you saw look like this http://images16.fotki.com/v302/photo...SCN0470-vi.jpg ? It's a special editon Jetta with bigger breaks, Recaro seats, BBS wheels, sport suspension, 6 speed transmission, front and rear valence, and side skirts.

Yeah I know a girl in my area driving around a red one. I absolutely hate her. She knows nothing about the car and got an automatic when she could have had a 6 speed.

all of those type of trannies suck. Having that on a sports car is redundant imo and I don't even know why people bother with them. The sad part is some people glorify these so much, they think they blow the doors off a manual transmission car in a race. I mean, its a small, lightweight car and the engine isn't that big. Lazy asses just don't want to deal with driving stick. The only exception is if you have a condition in which you can't deal with shifting.

All of those types of trannies? Guess what........you're wrong. Volkswagens DSG with paddle shifters (basically tiptronic) shifts faster than a manual.
