A common scam we have at BestBuy is kids using camera phones to take pics of the #'s on the back of the gift cards on the front of every rack... and as the linked site shows, they'll periodically check to see if its activated. 100% real.

BestBuy employees do not get any type of discout on gift cards... however, there is a bug in BestBuy's POS system that pertains specifically to gift cards and how to make them for free... but we won't get into that. =D
