My Commentary on Nopi Nationals (Long Vent)

So Ive had the weekend to calm down, and maybe reflect on some things that have occured at Nopi Nationals this past weekend.


Let me first start off by saying this. Thanks to Alex (ARFNSX), and the other people that had helped me this past weekend in getting things done. I really appreciate you guys stepping up to help me.

Now, being a part of the press "crowd" for a little while now, Ive noticed a general trend. You're either treated well as press, or you're treated like absolute crap. From the absolute beginning at Nopi on Friday afternoon I noticed extreme disorganization, which wasnt a huge suprise, but even trying to obtain my media credentials, nobody had any clue as to where to go. Finally after an hour I find the RIGHT person to speak to and he takes care of me. Now here is where I start to get a little irate at the how Nopi treats their press. As Im driving my cart towards the "hop-off" contest, I stop to ask a security guard if it is alright if I pull my cart along the grass area. I ask this for two reason. I dont want "spectators" messing around with some of my equipment in my cart, and taking my drinks and food that I had with me. Which did occur. The security guard says that is okay. So I proceed to pull up onto the grassy area, as I am greeted by a Nopi "Event Staff" person. He then asks me for my credentials, and I flash my media pass. Once again, no problems pulling into the grassy area. Hell I even see another cart on the other side of me park there as well. No problem right? Well out of no where I see Mark Meyers , come rushing towards me screaming and telling me to "GET THE HELL OFF THE GRASS". Do you really think that's how you should treat and speak to your press? You may have some 90 year old man with a Sony camera taking your photos. You may love to post sub-par quality photos on your website and be proud of them. But there are people there that love to do what they do and take pride in the quality of media they present. But just as much as I DID respect the staff at Nopi , you sorely lost my respect as an individual and a professional.

So that isnt where it ends. Later that afternoon, Ludacris's tour bus pulls into the track area. AMS Security blocks off spectators, blocks off all other traffic near the stage area. I proceed to walk towards the area where they had blocked off and I asked the Event Staff guy if I could get in. He said he didnt know but he let me go in because I had credentials. Now, Im standing around with the guys from StreetFire.net, thinking to myself, okay so Im sure we will be able to get some shots. But then out of nowhere a guy with a black security shirt comes and tells us "you all have to get behind the barricades, press have no priveledges here, get behind with everyone else". So what is the point of a press credentials? Could you tell us Mr.Myers? Id really like to know, because the only good I saw out of the press credentials this weekend, was the free tickets I got. Because I sure as hell wouldnt have spent 90 dollars for that crap that went on this weekend.

So how about those press people. You know people should take pride in what they do and how they do it, but when you see a guy standing in front of you with MEDIA credentials and hes taking photos with his Motorola Razor or 80 dollar special from wal-mart, youve got to think to yourself. Who screens these people? It doesnt take a rocket scientist to notice a press guy taking photos with a camera phone. That is absolute and utter bullshit. Joe Schmo is preventing from the other professionals and myself from taking photos because he's trying to find a cool angle to set his camera wallpaper with. Maybe you all wouldnt have to tell your "5 dollar an hour security guards" to push press behind barricades along with everyone else if you screened them first.


As for a final thought, I have this to say. Ive been going to Nopi Nationals for 4 years straight now. My first two years showing, my third year showing taking first place in my class at a booth, and this year as covering the event. This year has to top it off the most. I first hand noticed the biased judging. Passing by some elderly gentleman wearing a "Nopi Judge" shirt, I notice this. He walks around an Eclipse I believe for about 2 minutes and then walks up to a TransAM (black in color). I then hear him say sweet car and asks the guy about it for a good 15 minutes. Its really obvious what kind of cars the judge favors. :rolleyes: I dont like bad talking and trashing something I dont know a lot about, but Nopi takes the cake. They treat their press like shit, they think that jello wrestling contests are "cool", burnout contests are the in thing amongst performance enthusiasts, having a Ludacris concert is really a good thing for this type of event, and selling alchohol and not having any security check points to check for weapons is SAFE :rolleyes:

George Id have to agree.. on Sunday me and Chris another supra buddy) drove in together, so we drove around to the other side to get into the featured parking.. only to be told by the guys that we had to turn around, and they were complete jackasses about it.. after we were told at the tunnels we werent allowed to go left.. so we had to turn around and go the other way and get shit from the dude at the tunnel.. we ended up turning around again and had to go through a road in the middle to go to where we were trying to go.. No wonder why the crowd gets less and less every year...

Pablo was pissed at me because I and a few others (full-lock) werent supposed to be on that list to shoot for IA. WHere is the big deal? I dont know honestly. When Pablo started working with Matt, is when I started noticing Pablo talking to me differently and stopped coming up to me to shake my hand.

I personally think I excel at what I do, and Im advancing at a fast rate. I submit work to a National magazine, and have had a major company use my photos in their catalogs. That's just a small fraction of what I actually DO TELL people on here. But that doesnt mean im a douchebag. Im just proud of my accomplishments and I talk about it on here. Im WAY more humble about it in person and to be honest quite shy about telling people anything.

Would Jeff done that well in the regular lot? cant really say, but I like to think we won because the car is dope, very clean, displayed well, and we earned it..... booth or not.
So in the end, its all hit or miss, like any car show. When there is 7,000, you have to expect it if you are in a small class, or street category. We know they work hardest in the wild classes, and Honda category.

It also means you have access to designated locations for close up photos and video such as in the drifting area, access in the bikini contest area, the burnout area, etc. It does mean you can go where regular spectators can't, but it's at the discretion of the event organizers. In this case, a security guy told someone to get back behind the barrier for the Ludacris thing. OK, fine. Then Ludacris doesn't get his picture taken by people with general press creds. Big deal. Like Ludacris cares, he probably has his own personal photographer.

Nemesis- You were on the list, I remember seeing your name..You are correct is registering with Seth in that regard.The majority of Media checked in Saturday morning, and media was advised to check into that vendor gate at that time, not saying you were wrong, but they were checking in vendors and sponsors on friday...maybe that explains some of the confusion

Damn, this is a long ass thread already. Since my name was mentioned I will say this. I DO NOT SHOOT FOR IA. I have covered some events and submitted the photos to Paul to use. If he used them it was at his discretion but I have never been the IA photog. I have not been able to post as much due to my new job and the direction I am taking my company is a different direction then the normal car events.

As for all this bitching back and forth, its IA gotta love it. As for Nemesis, he takes some great photos and I am happy to see another local photog make it into the magazines. Congrats Man. Tom (Quickbrick) is also another great Photographer and has a lot of expierence and talent. Some people like the photos you take and some don't, fact of life. As for the Road Atlanta bit, it was messed up and I was pissed but it is water under the bridge and I have no hard feelings towards anyone about that. Yes Pablo did say he wanted to use my photos on IA but I was NEVER the IA photog.

As for Paul, Julio, and Pablo. I have met all three and hung out with them and although they can be assholes they are always straight up with you (or atleast with me) and let you know where you stand with them. They have done an amazing job with IA so far, especially considering it is just a hobby.

NOPI, well that is a whole nother story.

Oh and glad to see thinkfast and B still holdin it down for the asshole crew.

I told you why I was pissed off at you, and that was because of all the shit talking behind my back you did. actually we do this shit basically for FREE ;) if you would like to see who pays for shit i can show you personal checks for everything... trust me if this was a full time gig for us i'm sure it would do great but considering we enjoy this as a hobby i'll say it has its perks thats about it.

Nemesis, are you sure that it was MARK Meyers? Mark is usually very cool and laid back. Mike gets worked up during NOPI a lot more - with good reason. He has to lay out a lot of money to put on the show, and has to deal with media (such as TV). He is not as stressed most of the time.

This thread makes me sad. Everyone in it is my friend and they're all fighting. From George to Pablo from Glenn to Julio and Paul. I have had my moments with all of them (almost). Everyone here has their good points and their bad ones. It's pointless for me to get into it. I can only lose in that situaton. I hope everyone can come to some kind of middle ground someday. Ithink it would be the best thing for the car community in the Atlanta in the long run. But who am I to talk. I'm the biggest drama queen in the South :) welp.......I'm still sorry this is happening.

Just would like some answers, and a discussion like the adults we all say we are. I have no problem working any problems out with anyone, just as long as horse shit opinions and prejudging is left out. However, its kind of hard when the other person doesnt answer any of the legit questions you pose, and simply respond with talk of masturbation. If Im wrong, then tell me, if Im right and you are afraid to answer questions, then say so. You clearly display your disliking towards me, so tell me why? What's so hard in that?

I know you can't please everyone and coming or not to a NOPI event is your choice. It doesn't matter to me if you do not come to my events. Well for clarification purposes...This thread started out as a simple rant..which people are entitled to b/c things never go the way one assumes they will...w/e

It didnt turn into a "us vs. Nopi" thing until a couple of comments were made by people representing Nopi (I assume this, as will others, based on the screen name of the guy posting.) Now this is the thing...IA and NOPI are 2 totally different things....U run a company...IA runs the streets. U do business. IA handles the business u do...Supply and Demand right?

If anything I think this should be dropped and at the same time maybe u should talk to ur "reps" (used loosely) and have them not use ur company's name when on a public board bashing people that others on the board look up to and at the same time may have some influence over who does business with you.

I was at NOPI. I didnt have a good time...I left. But u still got my money so there is no point in me bitching right? Exactly. (Not directed at NOPIGUY)

i went to nopi, it sucked but i had a vendor pass to its not that big of a deal cause i spend maybe 5 bucks while i was there. next year i will not be going even if its for free, cause... it sucked
