megasquirt standalone

i notice latley on alot of other forums that alot of people are going megasquirt, is it really that great and is there any difference between it and a more expensive standalone. (aem, haltech, motec, fast)

i'm a firm believer in the saying you get what you pay for, i'd rather spend the money than to cheat myself or my car.

also are there any downfalls in using the megasquirt compared to a regular standalone

it just seems to fishy for a standalone for around $200

from what i understand megasquirt is a piggy back as an extra injector controller that uses your existing ecu. this may have changed from when i was examining different management solutions when i first boosted my car 2.5+ years ago.

it's not a piggyback, it's a standalone

it does away with the factory ecu

It's a standalone. I had an old V1.1 on my FB. Worked great.

ah ok. when i was looking at megasquirt they only had the extra inj controller that i could find. time for me to do some more research.

one of the factors in the cost... i think you actualy have to build it.

It can be either a fuel piggyback system or a full standalone, depending on how you build it and implement it. It can control anywhere from a 1 cyl lawnmower to a 16 cyl engine, fuel only, or fuel and spark, or if you really want to, spark only. There are pre-built systems offered for sale for anywhere from $300 to $600. However, if you have patience and good soldering skills you can have a full standalone that can handle a bunch of extas (nitrous control, launch control, 3 sequential shift lights, electric fan control, water injection, etc...) for under $200. My kit is a Megasquirt 1 Version 3.0 circuit board.

Kyle brought up a good point, the ECU is pretty awesome and can do alot, however if you're installing a standalone into a new vehicle with all kinds of side / front / anus airbags, all kinds of engine sensors, safety equipment, this that and the other, you may want to go a more produced route. However, if you are stripping that same new vehicle to a track only car, then by all means, this would be a ECU kit to definately keep in mind.
