thinking of mounting a B16A head on a crv bottom end. What do i need to know before i start this project and is it a good combo?

its a standard swap theses days. search for lsvtec on google.

Ive also heard with this swap, it is a pain in the a** to get aftermarket cams to time correctly. is there any truth to that?

no there is no truth to that, its the same thing as an lsvtec and i use big cams on my lsvtec. Only reason big cams wont time correctly is if the head is shaved down a ton, and that goes for any cam.

It sure is a good combo...well if its done right...
Parts NEEDED:
GOLDEN EAGLE LS/VTEC KIT 84MM IF YOUR NOT GONNA BORE OUT THE BOTTOM END OR UPGRADE THE PISTONS...STOCK :GOODJOB:
ARP GSR HEAD STUDS
HEAD RESURFACED
VTEC ECU
VTEC WIRING HARNESS
VTEC SPARK PLUGS
B16 SPARK PLUG WIRES
KNOCK SENSOR OR CHIPPED ECU WITH KNOCK SENSOR DELETED
NEW OIL
COOLANT
YOU CAN USE THE WATER PUMP FROM THE B20
YOU CAN USE THE OIL PUMP ALSO NO NEED TO CHANGE THEM UNLESS THEY ARE READY GOING BAD, THEN IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO CHANGE THEM BEFORE YOU GET DONE WITH YOUR SWAP.
IF YOUR PUTTING THE SWAP IN A NON VTEC CAR, YOU WILL NEED TO WIRE UP THE VTEC AND THE KNOCK SENSOR. EITHER TTHE RIGHT WAY OR THROUGH THE ECU
THATS PRETTY MUCH IT...

Use the GSR head not the B16 Head. The B16 CC Volume is 42.70 CC's and the GSR CC Volume is 41.60 meaning higher compression from the start.
B16/B20 lsvtec 9.1:1 approx.
B18/B20 lsvtec 9.3:1 approx.

to answer your question 98blackcivic they flow virtually the same. they both have 28mm exhaust valves and 33mm intake valves. so the difference in flow is going to be in the B16 mani VS the GSR mani and also port matching. to got the most power out of the B16 Honda cast it as close as the could so that it would flow good. they did not focus on this with the GSR being that its a larger displacement engine and did not require such

If you port match a GSR Head and run a skunk2 mani on a B20 block. VS a B16 port matched with a skunk2 mani on a B20 block I willing to bet the GSR head would give more power.

Yea any b series vtec oil pump will work. They pump more oil to the head than a non vtec oil pump

correct...it has to be with in the years...0bd2 all same...0bd1 all the same...they all do the same thing...no need to change oil pump and water pump... just do the basics...gsr head is better than a b16 head...the diff is the combustion chambers...

No OBD 1 is very slightly different.(different part number) OBD 2 are all the same, and even the B20 oil pump is the same as the 96^ oil pumps.

My sources ( I work in Parts at Acura) ;)

yeah thats what we are saying "OBD1(92-95) has 1 part#" and "OBD2(96-up) has another part#" not that they all have the same, just the same within their emmission code regardless of Vtec or non
