View Full Version : Rx-7 got fucked again

I know I've crashed 3 Rx-7s but this was NOT MY FAULT.

Here is the whole story.

Last night, 4-22-2010, at 11:30 I was sitting at a redlight alongside an Acura at Lavista and Northlake Parkway waiting for the light to turn green. After waiting fro about 30 seconds or so, I look in my rearview to see a fast approaching set of what looked to be Ford Taurus headlights, it was at about the 1.5 bus length distance that I realized this person was not slowing. I let off the brake and put the gear lever in first, hoping to quickly turn right at the light and get out of the way, but I didn't even get the opportunity to let the clutch out, I was hit. After being pushed into the intersection, I was now in danger of getting side swiped. I put it into 2nd, and rolled through the intersection to the other side, and immediately pulled off of the road. As I was getting out of the car and getting the police on the line, the light turned green. The Ford Taurus took off with tires squealing, and the Acura, my only witness, left as well. I had been fucked in a hit and run case.......... Until the cops showed up about 10 minutes later. "Are you the gentleman who just called in about being hit? "Well, yes, I am, but I don't think you can help without the other guy." And then I got wonderful news. "Oh, we think we might have found him, there was a man in an Acura who saw the whole thing and followed him then called us to get him, we've already got it settled, now we just need you to describe the vehicle......

And now I am unsure of what will happen, or how I will get into a different Rx-7, (I doubt this one is getting fixed, they total soo easily due to being worth jack shit). I am pissed though, I JUST built this car not even 6th months ago from a different crash. The car still drives but the door doesn't close smoothly, so I think there is frame damage.

And my nose hit soemthing, I think my head went back and my nose hit the roof of the car.

That sucks ass, man.

Thank goodness the acura was helping out and not just leaving you hanging.

I always enjoy seeing a clean rx7 on the road. If this one isn't repairable, I hope to see you in another one soon.

Yeah I'm thankful for being ok, and I'm sure I'll bounce back with likely ANOTHER 7, but we'll see.

Well, think about it this way. You are like the Dukes of Hazzard TV show and what it did to the values of 69 Chargers. You are single handedly driving up the value on first gen RX7s. :)

On another note; I have a house in the Tucker area, and I didn't even know there were any RX-7s that rolled around there.

Dang, I wish I had checked in with you a night or two ago.. I was going to call you about whether or not you were off today to come out to the autox school, but I knew it was a last minute reminder and that it was going to be pouring all day, so I decided not to hassle you. Either way--glad that you're alright! I'll hit you up soon.

It was at one point. Then Ray's motor blew up, and we built it out of my previous 7 and his shell. There was so much love in the build of this car. This one had the most sentimental value in it BY FAR. It's definitely totaled. Insurance companies think these things aren't worth jack-shit so I'll probably get like a $600 check for it, then I'll spend half of it buying the car back just because the mods on the car are worth more than the damn thing itself, then with $300 or so try and figure out what to do..... probably build another one out of this and a clean rolling shell(AGAIN).

Wow, that Acura ftw. You never answered the question about whether or not the taurus guy was drunk. Either way, and i don't know anything about the law, but cant you press charges on the guy and seek some kind of reparations for your losses. that would be the only way i could think of that any where near the true value of the car could come into the equation.

I don't know, the cops won't tell me about the other guy at all. They can't give me answers because I'm not allowed to know anything when I am trying to prove it was him in court.

Well at least someone did the right thing and followed the guy. The situation could be worse. Hopefully you will get enough from the insurance company that will help you get a new car. Best of luck.

Look on craigslist, eBay, AutoTrader, and anywhere else you can think of. Find some 7s like yours with similar mods in similar condition. His insurance company owes you for everything on your car. Your own insurance can deny coverage on mods you didn't tell them about etc etc, but his owes you for everything in the exact condition it was before the accident. I doubled the original offer for my CRX this way.

You bring up an interesting point. Only MY insurance company can deny mods on my car adding value(due to absence of their mention on my policy). I looked up the NADA value for my vehicle at $3,200 and I looked up every mod still in production and printed screen shots of their value when new. The total price of all the mods in new condition is roughly $3,000. So with all the evidence, I can possibly get depreciated value of the mods added onto the NADA's figure of $3,200 (I've also printed out) and make enough money from the case that I am in a car that actually matches the value of my old 7 in terms of cleanness and speed. Perhaps a nice second gen or another "nearly perfect" first gen like mine. Thank you for this information, I think you may have just saved me from building ANOTHER 7 out of a bare frame and incredibly damaged parts car, which was fun yes, but a HUGE hassle and use of time.

Good luck with that. You are going to be hard pressed to get that, especially if you didn't have collectors insurance on it at the time of the accident. You can certainly try to do what was suggested and I honestly hope that you succeed. If you don't though, don't be suprised. Insurance companies, especially third party ones since it's not your insurance company that is paying for the claim, are not going to be near as easy to get that kind of money out of.

I hope it works out for you though, but I would get a second car and a lawyer because you will probably need both before that court case is settled.

good news guys I got the police report, the other driver admitted to hitting me and running from the scene because "he was scared". He had expired registration and is in jail facing multiple charges. I have the witness information, so they are getting a hand written thank you letter, A.S.A.P. So it's no longer a question of proving him guilty, its all a matter of working out a deal with his insurance company. I'm not asking for the N.A.D.A value of $3,200 plus the price-when-new of the mods ($3,304.80) at a total of $6,504.80 because it is unreasonable, but I am hoping I can settle this with at least $4,000 to try and get back into a car that is equally clean and capable.

Body shop quote for repair price: $2194.83

Now it just depends on what they value the car that'll decide what happens.

Yeah I know I see unlucky with 7s, but right now it's the only car I know well enough to fix just about anything for cheap, so another 7 it is.

UPDATE: I'm thinking I'm about to get around $2,200 from insurance. I'm gonig to buy a rolling shell for $400 and the other $1,800 is going into an engine build.
(4 port massive street and exhaust porting, higher compression and lighter rotors, Rx-8 stationary gears (for a 9,500 RPM redline), and a new exhaust that'll flow better)

Comming soon: A 210 whp N/A first gen with a better power to weight than a Lotus Elise.
