This thread is full of win, 1 eagerly awesome owner trying to do something different and put a bad ass engine in a lil ass car. Then you've got 2 dicks trying to see who's the longest.

Whew...sigh bench racing at it's best. talking about a car that was built in 07, 3 years ago. The timing wasn't the problem essentially, it was the tps wiring the pinouts on the ecu. But anyway who cares. Past is the past, life is too short to hold a grudge, also too long. So stop cluttering up this thread. I wanna see more updates on this torque monster!

Good luck Louis! Definitely a different car! I give you mad props for approaching this sort of a challenge.

i havent thought too much into it besides the polyurethane mounts. im hoping it will be enough to keep it still. if anything hits it will probably be the rear header on the power steering rack.

DeeAOne

yes the mounts are filled and done. i did them awhile ago. the stuff i used appears to be harder than polyurethane, lol.

so today i didnt do anything but upgrade my alternator. i planned on using the 4 cylinder 60 amp alt since it mounts up the same. the only thing i would have had to do was change the pulley to a groove belt one. but i decided to just get a new one instead. 90 amps as well. now i just have to find a bolt long enough to mount it up. :goodjob:

so, i was doing some brainstorming yesterday about my axle issue. here is the problem for those who dont know.

my car's wheel hubs have a 26 spline count. the trans is a g series trans which all have a 28 spline count. so obviously the mx-3 axles wont fit in my wheel hubs. by the way, the mx-3 gs is a 1.8l v6. they are the shortest v6 axles to use that will still work. the probe, mx-6, and 626 are way too long.

the newer proteges have this 28 spline count that i need. so my plan was to swap hubs, struts, lower control arms, everything over to my car from a 90-94 pro. this might take a little modification but the two generations arent hugely different.

after a little bit more researching, i was told that even with the hub swap, the axles will still be TOO LONG. the wheelbase of my car is a little shorter apparently. yet another headache.

so now, im going to attempt a custom made shorter mx-3 axle. i have a friend with access to a very strong gas welder. im going to see if he can cut and weld them back together. i have taken balance of the axle in to account and will trying to test that as well. its worth a shot right?

stay tuned! :goodjob:

kfzemx3
12-31-2009, 06:03 PM
whats the difference in length? Not sure if this would work, but if you take both sets of axles to a shop that specializes in axles, you could have them mate the two...

lol now this is where my mechanical grammar gets funky as i don't know what the 2 parts of the axle are called, but basically take the part that fits into the hub from the protege, and mate it to the part that goes into the tranny from the mx3

We've done it before when putting in the lsd tranny from the lantis. just reversed we used the mx3s to fit the hub.

DeeAOne
12-31-2009, 06:26 PM
that was my first idea. i was going to get the 323 hub and put it on the mx3 axle. only thing is the mx3 axle is much bigger. the bearing assembly wouldnt fit into the 4 cylinder cv joint.

Actually more than likely not. Louis your best bet as for axles is to find a shop like DSS that can fix that up. The balancing part is no freaking joke. It will be impossible for you to make it right once theyve been re-welded back together.

yeah i just heard about this place tonight from kyle perry. i didnt know there was a such shop in town. id pay the price for them to be done right.

so, i gave this DSS place a call and they said i have two options:

1. they can make an mx-3 axle with a bigger 323 hub on the outer end to fit my wheel. price: $600. shipped to my house in 8-10 weeks.

2. they can make a custom axle specially for my application. price: $800. shipped to my house probably within 2 weeks. this will probably be the stronger of the two.

what do you guys think?

kfzemx3
01-04-2010, 02:19 PM
800 is a good price for axles, I'm guessing these are also going to be able to with stand higher number of hp/tq would guess around the 600 range

800 is a good price for axles, I'm guessing these are also going to be able to with stand higher number of hp/tq would guess around the 600 rangeyeah. he asked how much power i was making, i told him my motor is stock besides the basic i/h/e. he said i could try the first ones. hes not guaranteeing they wont break but they have a one year warranty. so idk. the problem is still, they might need to be shortened a little, and i forgot to mention that.

Go with the custom ones, will handle more power and seems like a safer bet if the shop is telling you they might still break. And being that people snap stock axles with Ze's its a better bet just all together. Plus I mean 800 over 600, its just 200 for a better product.

yesterday i went to the pull a part in conley and grabbed the whole front suspension assembly off a 94 323. BG chassis.

got some good news and bad news.

good news: the whole assembly seems to be a direct bolt on, amazingly. but the thing that im scared about since it seems to have went in so easy, does every bg have the spline count i need? i got the stuff from a 94 hatch. even the tie rod ends bolt up, and look like they will be straight with just an alignment.

all the did for the struts was simply slap the bf top hat on the bg strut.

bad news: the axle nuts are frozen solid in the hubs. im going to have to take them to a shop to get them out. hopefully wont be too much pain in the ass. but since they are in there, i went ahead and tested the length of axle. and the passenger side length is perfect. this all seems too good to be true. lol.

the driver side has not been touched yet since i need to get the nut off tomorrow, so i didnt bother putting it on.

whoever said the thing about bg hubs with bf struts was right, when one hole lines up, the other is slightly off.

yea you will be golden with the BG hubs. BUT! there is 1 more small issue that happens sometimes with the swap in the BG. And using the gs axles with the bg front, Is that the axles will bind, because the MX3 GS is 30mm wider in the front. So you may need to get the mx3 GS lower Control Arms.

BUT! when i used the GS axles in my bg hubs/front suspension, i didnt have this issue. And a lot of people actually dont have this problem, its kind of sometimes it dont work...lol. but the bf might be different.. so i guess you wont know until u get the gs axles in..

i finally got both axles out, so i went out tonight and got the passenger side done tonight. here is how it sits with the wheel turned straight. its not too bad. looks like ill be able to straighten it out with just an alignment. ill have a 4x100 lug pattern on the front for now.

this is a stock bg strut on ebay springs, no sleeves.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i143/Yankee4life91/SDC10719.jpg

im probably going to have to put a spacer between the tie rod ball joint and the spindle. it will not get tight enough to keep the tie rod from moving before the actual spindle and wheel turns.

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i143/Yankee4life91/SDC10725.jpg

the hub swap on this side actually wasnt that hard. the bottom two holes that bolt the spindle to the control arm are slightly off between bf and bg. i just took a decent sized drill bit and widened it up.

next, driver side. :)

I can't believe I read through all of those posts. Well, I do have some advice on the p/s pump and the rack and pinion issue...... Who says that you have to use the power steering pump just to make the water pump spin? Best solution is to completely remove the pump. The tensioner pulley should be replaced with an idle pulley from a '95-2001 explorer if I remember right, but I could be wrong. You need a pulley that is grooved and it has to have the 1603 bearing in the center of it to the locking nut will fit in the center.

As far as the alternator goes, just bolt up the KL alternator and leave it be.

I would've never welded in the engine mount bracket because you practically need that space to remove the water pump pulley bolts. I would've bolted them up and just made a plate specifically for welding up a bracket so you could bolt up the mount bracket.

On ebay, they sell an aluminum 2 pass radiator for the BG for $125. Avoid the civic radiator like the plague.

My car is on jackstands with no transmission, if you get my drift. It'll be running soon :ninja:

if u compare it to a honda j32a that makes 225hp-215tq its a winner..

or the 1st gen 3.5 vq that was making 250hp in 2006, or the vg 3.0 that made 200hp in the maxima in 1998..

160hp/tq out of a aluminum 2.5 was top notch back in 94..

finally, a little bit of update. i decided to tackle some of the wiring since i was waiting on other parts to come in. i focused mainly on getting power to the starter. i took the entire power side off my 4 cylinder harness and wired it up to the neccessary parts on the klde. i was almost there when i ran into one plug that i had no clue where it went to. i knew it was ignition related since it only had power in the on position. well with the help of another bf 323 owner he pointed me exactly in the right direction.

apparently, its the reverse light switch for the transmission. the reason i couldnt find the plug was obviously because i dont have a 4 cylinder transmission anymore. i simply bridged the two thicker wires and wahlah! with the turn of the key, starter power. at least half way anyway. im thinking my starter might be pooped out. but at least it has power.

as an added bonus that i didnt even expect, fuel came pouring out through the line. the same wire also powered the fuel pump relay. so power and fuel, so far. :goodjob:

Ah ok, well if it works I see no reason to change it. I usually see the guys who do the 4cyl to v6 swaps just use the entire harness from the GS thats why I was wondering. BUT no point in spending extra money if the other harness works :)

i havent done much because i need a half shaft. i dont want to risk firing it up with no axle in the trans.

just to keep you guys happy, a little update

ordered an egr block off. the weird thing about having the millenia intake on the probe block is that the egr is now in two different places. millenias have the egr on the manifold while probes, mx6s, and 626s have them on the block...so i had to get one for the block as well. the plate on the block is an oem one off a millenia.

the aftermarket one

did a little work on the car today. i was pretty disappointed on the outcome. i grabbed a halfshaft off a probe at the local junkyard today, and put my mx3 axle into it. i went to bolt it to the block and slide it in the hub. the holes line up perfectly but the the whole setup it too long. i guess i will have to get it shortened. what a set back.. :(

the hub sticks out much too far.

DeeAOne
02-11-2010, 11:06 AM
well, according to the guy who is doing it, there is a process to do it the right way. his theory is to cut the axle, notch one of the cuts so the weld can actually get down in the cut and have a strong bind, and then get a sleeve of some sort, titanium or steel most likely, and slide it over the weld and weld that too. of course this will have a be a strong welder and seeing that its the same welder that welds planes together on the air force base, i think it will hold if done right.

the thing im worried about is will it stay balanced.

at this point im debating pulling the motor back out and putting my original B6 diff in my 626 trans to retain stock everything, axles, hubs, etc. i kinda wish i had gone that route in the first place. lol i would be driving by now.

no! i refuse to take 1 the motor out again!! 2 take that tranny apart again!! 3 pushing the date of ur car back again just bc of a stupid axle! lol we will get it done man but trust me we dont need to get inside that trans again just try the axle cutting. if it fails save for one custum one since already one side fits ya kno?

Do it lol. It bolts right in, 100%. It is the same engine as the stock festy, just bored out. I think his is a Carbed if I remember correctly, so you'd have to do an efi swap. It is a nice simple swap and if your old motor is in better shape than the one he has in there, then I'd say do it. It would only take an afternoon.

his grandmother does. but its got 233,xxx so its getting weak. it is carb too. i told him to put B6T rods in mine and boost it.

my old engine had a fresh rebuild right before i got it. the bottom end looked brand new including pistons/rods. all it needs is a new crank from the crank pulley breaking off.

i would say the De would be better suited for boost.. personally. The Ze would be the ideal to build for NA...
