Ok, I have an 96 manual Altima that's giving me some major problems all of a sudden. I just flushed the old gear oil, and replaced it. 4 days later I suddenly lose reverse, third gear doesn't like to go in half the time, and 5th seems to pop out while driving at low RPM's.
Any help that anybody can give me would be awesome.

Not sure if it'll help with an answer, but the engine is the KA24DE.

I doubt its the clutch, my brother and I replaced it less than a year ago.
To eleborate on when it went out, I had to drive to Dahlonega from Athens, I stopped at a gas station and it worked fine about 20 miles out, but when I got to Dahlonega, I tried to pull out and it simply wouldn't go into reverse. I waited over night to let it cool, no change. No leaks from the tranny, no leaking oil, etc. the cars been through a lot but I can't think of any peticular reason for it start acting up.

you need a tranny.... or you can take that one apart and try to rebuild it. but that is harder than it sounds. because nissan likes to have all the gear hubs and bearing surfaces pressed on. which usually means youll break one or two when pressing them off. and currently you dont know whats wrong with the inside.. and im sure to replace half of the internals will be well more than double a used transmission will be.

Have u ever changed the gear oil b4 or is this the 1st time? And how many miles are on the car? If u have gone way too long without changing the gear oil, then ive heard u shouldnt change it out as thats the only thing keeping you tranny 2gether. All of the metal particles in the fluid that usually u want out, are now whats creating the fiction needed 4 your transmission to shift. Once those fluids are removed and replaced with fresh particle free fluid, then there is no longer any type of friction, and the transmission jus slips. Ive also heard dat is u have gone to long without changing it, some transmission shops will not change it. You should take it to a transmission shop, and let them take a look.

but your right though about the automatic... if you wait to long... then dont change it. but with manuals you can change it and be fine. he has more issues than just fluid when you loose gears.

I was actually thinkin' of changing the gear oil in my 96, I just reconsidered. LoL
Damn, Manuals shouldn't act like Autos in terms of fluid sensitivity.

I'll think about it for a later date, but I'm looking at getting a different vehicle completely. I've had this poor thing for 5 years now and I'd like to get something that looks better. Mine is very dinged up.
