View Full Version : how I keep cool in the atlanta heat (KOYO content inside)

While most of you were happily keeping frosty cool indoors blasting your A/C, drinking beer and downloading hardcore porn this weekend (which is what I would have rather been doing) I was forced to upgrade my cooling system to something that can withstand the ever rising temperatures in our wonderful city of atlanta, but felt like I was installing a radiator in HADES while being slapped on the back and face with hot torches!

So here are the items I purchased for this install

KOYO performance radiator for a 1995 Honda prelude

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab326/xstreethazardx/rad%20install/IMG_0025.jpg

2 mishimoto 12" race fans

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab326/xstreethazardx/rad%20install/fan.jpg

mishimoto fan mounting kits

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab326/xstreethazardx/rad%20install/mountingkit.jpg

Mishimoto fan switch and KOYO 1.3 BAR radiator cap (it is not included with the radiator you have to purchase it separately)

http://i876.photobucket.com/albums/ab326/xstreethazardx/rad%20install/IMG_0026.jpg

OEM HONDA thermostat (not shown) a little known FACT is that the thermostat for a H22A1 is smaller and WILL NOT FIT a J-SPEC H22A. this was learned the hard way. an H22A j-spec thermostat was special ordered from the dealership for this installation.

now here is our workspace (complete unapologetic car whoring below)

my final review of this install and the products (and honestly im being objective) is TOP NOTCH! the fitment of the KOYO is great as it slips right in to the OEM mounting brackets underneath BUT the KOYO is a fat whore! in my prelude the KOYO is so wide that the OEM fans actually mash up against the front engine mount and crossmember (which I knew was going to happen because it happened to my friend with the yellow prelude above) which is why I purchased the slim fans. and such a fat whore it took 2 bottles of coolant to fill that slut up! and still topped a little bit of it with water.

the mishimoto fans are awesome too, although they came with no instructions on how to mount them the "zip tie" system that they sell works out very well once we figured out how they work. they flush mount directly against the radiator and they blow like a friggin typhoon!

So there ya go IA...if you dont have one yet GO GET YOU ONE and stay cool in the fiery pits of hades.

Sorry for the thread jack, just showing some love.

I honestly have to say I got a deal on mine....through a hookup in Cali called assaultTECH

I paid a little under $600 for everything, and I still have (red) samco hoses on the way, I just couldnt wait for them so I did the install anyway

but retail I would say

$400 for the KOYO
$85 per mitsumoto fan so $170
$40 for the OEM H22A thermostat
$35 for the fan mounting kit
$35 for the KOYO radiator cap
$120 for samco radiator hoses
$60 for the mitsumoto fan switch

so lets see here....retail would be

$775 not including shipping

It's hard to make that gen prelude look nice.

Engine bay of the two tone is great, black one is nice overall.

we have both I suppose depending on your preference, the yellow/black one is set up like a show car (and won a whole bunch) and it draws a bunch of attention (I have heard it called rice and what not) but the guy that owns it put a shit-ton of money and work into that car. but dont get me wrong, its fast too. its built and I think it dyno'd around 230hp to the wheels N/A. I wont go into details of what hes done but its quick.

Mine I obviously went that "clean/JDM" route or whatever....at the time I started building this I didnt even know WTF jdm even was. I just wanted a car that

1. was a honda, I owned a civic before and really liked it
2. was decently fast
2. cost effective to upgrade and maintain
3. had to be "something different" not a civic / integra

and I saw the prelude on a honda site. I ALMOST got the 5th gen because they were newer, but I saw a shit ton of them....then I saw a 4th gen and loved how much of a bastard child and a hybrid of the other honda/acura lines it was and I knew I HAD to have one.

mine is actually an original SI VTEC that came with an H22A1 factory (I immediatly blew it up), Black on black (original black leather interior) it took me 6 months of scouring the internet to find it. it was a trade in at a BMW dealership...bought it straight up in cash that I carried into the dealership stuffed in a bookbag

I met the guy with the yellow and black one and we just went from there, I learned ALOT about modifying these cars from him and learned what works and what doesnt.

I went JDM out of sheer cost effectiveness and reliability, I stuck with mostly OEM or better parts because I just couldnt afford to experiment like he did....but im still learning with this car

here is a link I have recently found for inspiration....original indash TV, check it out

Do you know how amazing it would be to find a 4th gen with power seats/corner sensors and the original tv? that would be worth alot in the "JDM" scene.

I have a xenarc 7.5" touch screen with laptop hookup fiberglassed into my shifter console.

Id say it would be close to impossible... :(
