View Full Version : Automatic car stalling? wtf...
Hi, so I have a friend who's car is like a 1995 automatic. The car will have a rough idle and sounds like it wants to stall out. Even when it's been driven, the car sometimes stalls at a standstill! I don't understand what's happening, my guess it the transmission is out of wack, but I wouldn't know how to fix it. At high speeds the engine does fine, but it's when it's standing still is when it has problems. Turning on heat or A/C makes the problem worse. What could be the problem? and what would the solution be? Thanks for any help!

I see... Thanks I'll look into it. the only thing that doesn't match up is that it doesn't throw a CEL though. Plus it's unstable when it's in park also.

You need to fix your running problem, and then move to the transmission if there is even a problem with it.

^^^ Agree sounds like a tune up issue or timing

I bought a car because the guy said the tranny was bad, it was a 99 civic ex auto...
bought the car for 350.00 bucks and it was very clean car near mint...
got it home checked it over and the CEL was off but had a code random misfire .Checked it out an had a bad Distr rotor button , install a new cap an rotor ran like a champ and shifted fine...But when it was running or every now and then caused the tranny to act up!
So I got a 4500 car for 380 bucks and sold it for 4100...... Sucks I know this stuff and he didnt but isnt my fault!
So the reason for my story is check your engine and make sure everything is fine an running like a champ and then if it still acts weird check the tranny out...But I think you don't have a tranny issue at this time...Best of luck Joshua

to see if its your tranny or not, try to put it in park and see how it runs. if it idles fine then you know its a drivetrain issue...

I agree. I bought my 90 F-150 for $1000 because it had a bad fuel pump apparently... well the safety cut off got tripped ;) Then it shuddered bad when shifting, was a miss-fire issue.

If it was clogged it wouldnt run hardly at all. he stated that when you get up to speed higher speeds it runs fine without a issue only low idle an low speeds...Not the cat!

If it was clogged it wouldnt run hardly at all. he stated that when you get up to speed higher speeds it runs fine without a issue only low idle an low speeds...Not the cat! You'd be suprised. An ex had a '98 Civic that was idling erratically hot & cold...I replaced the idle control valve/solenoid and it fixed the CEL and it then idled fine UNTIL it warmed up. You'd have to keep your left foot on the brake and right foot on gas to keep from stalling. No CEL's. Replaced the O2 sensors, no change. It ended up being a partially clogged cat.
Normally if a cat is clogged you'd think whether it was hot of cold it would have the same effect. I don't think the material in them expands much to heat so I don't know how or why it was effecting it. Made no sense to me but with a new catalytic converter it still runs fine 2 years later and passes emmissions :screwy:

hey anything can be the cause....I think its his brakes lol:lmfao: :lmfao: :lmfao:
But yes I have seen that too...But going by how he said its running great at above idle I don't think thats his problem..Sounds more like tune up issue...But who knows could be his brakes:lmfao:
