Internship desired in Auto Collision.

Hi fellow IA'rs. I am going into my final quarter at Griffin Tech for autobody collision and repair. My job is probably going to lay me off by end of month, or by end of Feb for sure.

What I am asking is if anyone is looking, or knows any shop that maybe looking for a intern. My idea is too intern at a low pay rate, or for free to gain my expeirience.

I will be getting unemployment in the inevitable layoff, so I will be able to afford to intern for free, depending on location. The free part is more so like for 3-4 months, then have a chance to be hired on if my work/progression is satisfactory.

I have 2 cars, so I'm not overly concerned with travel, tho I would like something closer to the house. I live in Palmetto, which is 85-south, but I'm open to anything anyhow.

I just want to get into doing what I love. Oh, I do have the option of going 1 more quarter for refinishing. I have done some painting, but mostly autobody so far.

hey, good luck dude. hope you make it. i know that i went to school for the same with about 20 people in my class and i think that maybe 4 of us are still doing collision work

Be glad he retired... He taught some really BAD work ethics when it came to body work... He knew the business end, not actually doing the job right part...

Well from my understanding he quit this year. The school wanted him to do something else curriculum-wise that he I guess didn't wanna do. So he kinda packed-up all his stuff one morning & was gone! lol

Tho he's not my instructor anyway. I only had Rickey for like 1 quarter since I'm in the night class.....Vegeta

honestly the collision indstry is like everything else. not a lot going on. my dad is down about 30k from what he was making last year. He has an apprentice now. But if you can seriously afford to go 4 months for free then apply everywhere and someone will hire you. one of three things will happen

1. youll work for 4 months and get hired on based on work accomplished

2. youll work for 4 months and they decide they cant afford you and youll be let go with 4 months of experience

3. The economy will rebound and theyll give you a shot and hire you and let you go on your own.

but be forwarned my dad has had his apprentice for over a year. it takes alot of time for good shops to let you go on your own.

He works at United Collision in gwinnett. Alot of the kids there come from UTI with bmw certification though

thats where some of the best work comes from. A friends dad is a painter and if you saw his shop youd laugh but if you saw the cars coming out of there and then saw the shop youd be amazed.

hey... if you go to get into this industry, just be ready to have alot of patience. i just got put on my own after being an apprentice for 1 1/2 years. i work in duluth at classic collision. but i also worked at sprayglo for a year as there painter also. you will have to be able to put up with alot, but it pays off. i went to school with 22 people, and rite now. only 3 of us are still doing body. the industry is really slow rite now so good luck and just keep sending out resumes

Yeah this is about what I expect. I have no quarms about any of these 3 scenario's playing out that way. I do want to be shown properly hwo to do this job as I really have a love for cars.

I have also considered going back to take up a 1-year auto mechanic course, just for more education in the field....Vegeta

honestly i wouldnt waste the time doing the mechanics thing unless your getting pell grant or something to help with income. i know at my dads and most other shops ive been in they rebuild them the same way they build them at the factory. They have a dedicated mechanic who does everything but body work and paint. I.e. removing motors, replacing tire, alignments. For a shop its quicker,cheaper and more efficient to do it that way.

btw give that guy tracy listed a call never know what may come of it.

hey dude... just a heads up... we sub out most of our major mechanical work such as engine builds and such. we do minor mechanical work at my shop which is great pay but you will never find a body shop that is also a engine/trans shop. i would take that one year and start your intern or apprentance time. if you know how to remove and put back on hoses and brake calipers, then your pretty set. i think i removed 2 engines the whole time ive worked there and just put them back in.

Kool, the automechanic part was a thought incase I was unable to get into the collision field. So I have the option to go back 1 more quarter & strictly learn painting & refinishing, so I may do that, unless I do get a internship deal somewhere.

I am going to check Tracy's hook-up out, & another guy gave me a lead so I'm going to explore those today. Then I have to see about this job. lol There have been rumors for the last 2 months that they were gonna lay us off, but that's been 2 months, & we seem no closer.

I can't quit, to intern, so I'll have to wait for them to lay me off so I can get unemployment, for at least 3-4 months while I either finish school/and or intern. I do sincerly appreciate all the advice and help fellas, & Lady's!:goodjob: :goodjob: ...Dre'
