View Full Version : A common NOT so common problem?:
Well after 9 years dealing with the 88-91 civic/crx chassis I have only twice come across this problem and or have heard of it.It is the rear cross member where the rear motor mount bolts down.It seems some how they become weak and start to rip apart where the bolts thread down?.
The first time I came across this problem is @ the beginning of 2008 when a friend purchased a cr-x off of here for a project. The rear cross member had been destroyed and the owner before him tried to weld it back up?.But it was useless none the less,The other time I seen this problem was on Honda-tech where they claim it to be a common problem for the ef?.Has anyone came across this personally or have heard of this problem @ all w/our chassis?.Maybe w/some rust damage I can understand it causing this but not to sure what else really can cause this unless your running busted up oem mounts since 1988 or whatever and they all pretty much have lost all the rubber?....Anyone consider this a common problem? or maybe just common if you do not have decent mounts?.
Here is a photo of what I am trying to explain.[not mine]
In the photo the bolts seem fine but somehow still damaged from maybe the mount was wedged up agaisnt it?.

Its a common problem on high powered drag cars with swaps. I believe its due to using 3 mounts rather than the original 4 mounting locations. A more common problem is stretching the forks where the lca connects to the cross member. That's due to hitting curves and pot holes.

Mine was like it when I bought it. I'll have to be careful when I boost it again I guess. Not planning on doing many digs though.

Yep lol. That 4th mount makes a fairly big difference in support. When I pulled the boosted motor out of the CRX I noticed it was like that. I made sure to check the one in my new car before putting the motor back in. I think the person I got the Hatch from, must've had the same problem, and just bought a brand new one.
I'm on my way to the garage now to fab up a forward motor mount for my car. :)

it's from all that mad crazy B16 TQ :lmao: :burnout::lmao:
It has to be because of alot more than not using all mounting locations w/a drag car?.Seems to happen on alot of Dseries ef's ahhahaa and we all know that is no powerhouse!.But anyone who does not buy good mounts when doing a swap w/more than stock hp isn't too bright. We used Innovative 95a on the cr-x swap that was sold on here. The car came w/a nice torn up set of Yonaka's ahhahaa. But I guess you get what you pay for?.You buy quality parts and do everything correct it last and performs great. But if you buy cheap stuff and or install things rigged up you eventually will know what failure is.
Still this problem too me can not be so [common] a real common ef problem would be maybe the relay or something that happens alot! not twice.

I've heard about that with b series engines. not d series.
I'm running three mounts in my civic with a b and 4 mounts in my rex with a d.

I say when running [higher] hp/trq engine swaps might as well buy a nice tractionbar that allows you to use a front mount as well.Add this w/a nice stiff set of mounts and there is no way this could happen.
I know ESP has a nice kit for ef's:

89 CRx Si, 173K mi, purchased as shell, had d-series in it before I got it.
91 Civic hatch 212K mi at time of sale, had d-series until it hit probably 173K mi, then went b18a1
90 Civic hatch, 128K mi at time of sale, had d-series, currently owned by Saka
None of the three have seen that problem. It's gotta be due to the extra pull on the mounts that a turbo leaves. My LS motor was stock, but it's known to be a more torque-y motor.

Yea I have owned many many ef's and none had this problem.B16's/B18's/Dseries and still nothing.Maybe the problem is the owner strips out the rear mount threads or maybe cross threads it and eventually causes it to fail? I have no clue how but can agree more powerful swap could be the cause but what is the excuse for a Dseries or a rather stock B16?.It really is all too crazy.ahhahaa

Well, no, cuz it's not the teeth slipping out of the mount. It's literally the mount coming apart. The ONLY thing I could think of being user-mechanical error is if the bolt is not fully seated in there, and the female end of the mount is literally ripping in half from not all the teeth being seated. But it would only make sense if it happened once, maybe twice. But if several people are having this problem, this leads me to believe 1) there's alot of dumb people in this world (which I truly do believe) or 2) the car just wasn't designed to have a b-series without a b-series rear xmember like in japan.

Easy.
1) Look for someone who's replaced there's with aftermarket stuff (dare? Jfro?)
2) Check a salvage yard
3) Look around for part-outs
4) Check HT

I have seen this problem a handful of times in the last 7 years or so. My hypothesis is that it's caused by large engine movement, so someone with a swap that overpowers their front and/or rear mount could have some trouble. This includes people that have stock engines with totally shot mounts.
There is no aftermarket rear crossmember that I've ever seen, so stock is the only way to go. JDM would not be compatible unless you were doing a RHD conversion.

I'm running Hasport mounts that are 100% tight. Slamming gears in Vtec on a b16 or GSR will do it no problem. The rear member is 1/8" steel, with "nutserts" basically welded on the inside. Not much support there what so ever.
I greatly doubt in most cases that it's user error. I'm sure in some where people are to lazy to try and get that rear bolt tight they leave it loose and the vibration and the mount slamming down will cause it.
Most of the time its due to the fact that your driving an Econo-box that you've upgraded to make more hp/tq and its not built to take it. Sure, the car will be fine for a while, but eventually things are going to break.
Its a fairly simple thing to avoid. Make sure your mounts are tight, and it'll last for quite some time. Add the 4th mount, and it'll last even longer. It's by no means hard to run a 4th mount, even with the stock cross member, if your able enough to fab it up. A lot of people aren't, most of those people tend to have money so, go out and buy a traction bar lol.
I'm also planning on switching to Innovative mounts, or atleast the innovated rear mount. The Hasport mounts only use 2 bolts to hold it to the cross member, where the Innovative use 3. Using more surface area will help support. I don't know if the aluminum Innovatives use three, but I know the steel set does.

No way, the Hasports are way more shiny!!! lol
I really like the Hasport mounts, aside from their rear mount. They're very high quality, and CNC machined out of billet. Of which is far better than anything aside from say Ti or Mag. mounts lol

There honestly is no reason to actually [SLAM] the gears,a quick shift does exactly the same as if you do a [POWER SHIIUUFFTTTT]
