not all that suprising as voter turnout and overall population are higher than at any other time.
His percentage wasnt anything overly impressive though, which IMO is a MUCH better indicator of popularity.

Just to get this straight.. popular vote holds less weight than percentage as it pertains to popularity?

yes it does.
If you sample 100 people and a canidate gets 75 votes, then sample 1000 people and another canidate gets 700 votes, who is more popular?

id like to see what he'll get if he gets elected a second term. Traditionally the margin is higher on the second term

Nixon had miserable (for a winner)43.4% in 1968 and a whopping 60.3% in 72.
