I got new doors last week,so it was blue car with gray doors..so i decided to try to paint them at the house.
had a buddy from work get the paint mixed up for me,
Shop-Line; probably not the best in the world but atleast its blue.
1st) i sprayed the sides last week *Thinking it was already Reduced like i ASKD* but it sprayed out like sandpaper-looks flat blue, feels like sandpaper.
2)Went yesterday and got some specialty reducer for all temps, its a 1:1 Ratio, Sprayed it and still goes flat blue, and textured.?
Any Ideas getting actual SMOOTH base coat?
spraying with a (1.4mm)Sharp SGF-HLVP,gravity feed
kinda to show what it looks like and talking bout..and yes 2 clear coats too.. VVVVV

Last week; 400g on doors, then 800g on quarter and fenders so i could blend.
Dupont-wax grease remover, Tack-cloth after every coat layed down.
Then yesterday completely sanded the side down with 320G,Wax grease remover,tack..sprayed

Is it a single stage? Or a base/clear?

base/clear. im just having trouble laying the base down smooth.the clear like soaks into the dimples and still feels textured and dull.
i tryed to wetsand and buff the drivers side last week.
had to do 1000g to cut the texture down faster,1500 then 2000 and 3000..went through few places...and looks hazy cuz where the texture was are like small bubbles that show through the old color..of that makes since..

it has 2 coats of clear, thats what i was saying, the textured base soaks the clear into the crevicest..the end of the fender and quarter turned out best because it was just recleared,no color was shot..but it still has like big dropplets of paint splatterd in it.what it looks like when spraying..

edit: so you have clear on there? Just wet sand the clear and buff out to a beautiful shine.

You said you cleared those panels??? Looks like a flattening agent was added to the clear. How many PSI are you shooting the clear, and how many coats, and how thick are you spraying the clear? And did you mix the clear correctly? Most clears that I have worked with are either 4:1:1. But southern polyurethane universal clear coat mixes 1:1.
The base coat doesn't have to be that smooth, because base coat is just for color, the clear coat is your glamour coat. BUt if you want the base to be slick then yes you can wet sand the base pref. with 1000-1500 grit wet/dry.
To be honest doesn't look like you sprayed clear at all.
(i usually spray clear with a 1.4 and base with a 1.3)
And you don't necessarily need to wet sand with 1k and work your self up to 3k to buff. At work we just wet sand with 1500 and buff that out with a heavy cutting compoud with foam yellow cutting pad, then polish with 3m finesse it and black foam polishing pad. and comes out perfect. No need to break your back.

are u wipein the panel down good before paint??? also due to spraygun tip the low pressure my be drysprayin like a mf'r. if so itll feel like sandpaper and any metallic will stand up instead of layin down. and the bubbles to original color sounds like fisheye.. some sort of oil bases shine or wax on serface still

I usually spray my base at around 20 psi and my clear around 25-30psi.
You need to final sand with a higher grit sand paper too. Looking at your paint there are a lot of sand scratches. Before you spray the clear wet sand with 1000 and re-base to get rid of those sand scratches. I usually final sand with 800 around the primer, and grey/1000 wet where I blend.
And for the clear you bought at autozone, i've never used to so i can't say anything. But from the looks of it, doesn't look good. Just go to a paint store (finish masters off of huricane shoals in lawrenceville) and get a clear coat/activator kit. you can get a kit at around $70 for the smart clear, it is def. much MUCH better than the stuff you bought at autozone.

Yea, that could also be a problem. Get some lacquer thinner, take the gun apart and let it soak with the lacquer thinner for like 15-20 min. take them out and brush them off and whip them down, and see if that helps.

ok dont laugh..its ghetto..but it works.surprisingly almost no trash?! but then again still looks like shti..ha
This time i redid the drivers side; this side i previsoly buffed..so i 600G wetsand since i pretty much was already through the clear already to make smooth..cleaned up..then sprayed..
3coats of blue.this time i lightly dusted it and held gun little farther away to reduce paint droplet forming. base looks much better than other 2times i tryed not AS much texture.still dull and no metallic...now its all on to the clear...

try putting more clear down, it looks like you are just not putting enough down for it to level out. also, how much CFM does your compressor put out. If its not enough then it will just sputter the clear and not atomize it correctly. Most HVLP's require atleast 7-8 CFM usually more. My DeVillebliss uses over 10 when i turn it up. Also check your pressure drop when you are spraying. If you set the regulator at 25 you may only have 18 at full depression.
Hope this helps

im using a Brut 10gallon 2.5hp compressor, its 125psi max..
90psi 5.1...and 40psi at 4.1 (what it says on tank.lol)
and have the gun all the way open 50max,,then running the reg.and gauge reads 25psi.then 40 when i was doing clear.

turn your pressure down a bit, most HVLP's max out at 35. so i would try 30 especially if you have it all the way open. You may want to shoot a little less for the clear. I think you are just shooting too high of a pressure. If Bucky is close enough too you, you might want to pay him some gas money to come help you. I am further than he is. Or if you want to stop by the shop one day i can show you a few things. Some of the tips are hard to explain, and better to show in person.

this is what it turned out looking like after i buffed it the last time(last week)..its kinda hard to explain what it looked like..you can see from the pic.
now when i go get some new clearcoat..would i just scotch gray-pad to scuff it up to reclear?

Looked like crap..textured flat blue looked better than that...haha:(
VQ35 Star
08-20-2008, 01:15 PM
Yea take a bucket of water, a grey scotch pad and do it while it is wet. And if you want get some PPG scuffing paste too, to quicken the process. and then wash the car down with some dish washing soap, let it dry tape off and re-clear if you didn't go through the base.
BUt from looking at that texture, it looks as if you can feel it too. If so you might want to wet sand with 1k and then spray the clear. Don't bear down too hard and go through the base either, because I'm assuming your running low on the blue.
Some will tell you to just scotch pad it, but the texture will still be there, and when you re-clear it you wont feel it but the clear will maginify the texture so it will look as if it is orange-peeled/dry sprayed.
Good luck.

VQ35 Star

It should be fine, but without clear coat the base will be more prone to chips and scratches.
Before you reclear that fender, make sure you wet sand with 1k before you reclear.
Bring your gun to me, and i'll set it for you, i don't think the gun is set up correctly if your getting that much texture.

RUN SOM REDUCER THROUGH YOUR GUN WITH OUT ANY AIR HOSE AND SE IF IT COMES OUT IN A STEADY STREAM. IF NOT A STRAIGHT STREAM THEN GUN IS CLOGGED. SRRY BOUT CAPS. also b sure theres no moisture in the air when doing base and you can wait between coats. now the clear can b done anytime after base is layed down and do a light coat then a medium then a kinda heavy coat on the paint and clear. but on clear wait between coats till you can touch an oversprayed area and touch finger and thumb 2 gether and laeve a sticky trail kinda like bubble gum from the 2 fingers and then within a cpl mins start next coat. then let set all night and about 12 or so hours later water sand with 1000 grit. this is colorsanding. then get some 3m extra cut buffing compound and a godd multispeed buffer and buff till no sand scratches are visible. this takes the longest but must be done within 24 hrs. then if the paint hazes later buff untill paint no longer hazes.
