The 2008 IA Soapbox Derby and BBQ

Date: Saturday September 27, 2008. (Can be changed if deemed necessary)
Time: BBQ at 12 noon, Race(s) at 2 PM
Place: To be determined! Please PM me any ideas. Hoping for a central location near the perimeter.

The Event
Come join us for a friendly meet-and-greet with grilled burgers and dogs, cold beer and soda at 12 noon. At 2 PM, the race(s) will begin! Teams who wish to compete must build a vehicle to race in (more info below in the rules section). Grab those dusty bicycle wheels out of your basement, do some junkyard rummaging, bust out the old steering wheel you had before you got that baller Nardi and that stock seat you had before those sexy Recaros, whatever! Do whatever it takes to build a functional vehicle!

Everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of whether or not you are participating in the build and race. PM this page to all of your friends! Everyone is encouraged to come talk, have a good time, and watch the hilarity ensue as IA's finest compete for glory, bragging rights, and cool looking bruises. Be sure to bring your cameras and videocameras!

Please commit to bringing a food/drink item if you plan on attending. Indicate in this thread if you plan on attending and what you will bring to contribute to the BBQ - I'll keep a list in this original post. Even if you absolutely cant afford to bring some food for some reason, let me know that you'll be coming so I can keep a basic head count.

The Rules
Teams must consist of 10 members or fewer. Please abide by the honor system during the building phase!
Your team must build a single-manned vehicle to compete in the race.
No engines will be allowed, whatsoever! The car must be gravity-driven ONLY, as the race will be downhill. No pushing is allowed.
Your car MUST have functional steering and brakes - No exceptions. All cars will be examined before the race to make sure they meet this requirement.
You MUST have a helmet to wear - bicycle helmet, motorcycle helmet, football helmet - I don't care.
You may use any parts you'd like, automotive or otherwise.
No pre-made vehicles are allowed - you're not racing a rolling shell or a skateboard; You've gotta make it!
Shop sponsorship is encouraged, but please don't hire a shop to build your car. Metal fabrication, paint, and things of that nature are probably the factors that make the most sense as far as shop involvement is concerned.

If you have any questions about any of these rules, please feel free to PM me.

The Prizes
Consolation prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, as well as the following categories: best overall car, riciest ride, best-dressed driver/team, and perhaps a few surprises. Don't expect anything fancy - we're just doing this to have some fun!

If you plan on competing, PLEASE PM me your team name, the name of all your team members, and their IA names as soon as possible! I will list these on this post so everyone knows who they're up against.

I'll add more details, rules, and more to this post as they come up.

I think that the entry should be per team seeing how # of team mates varies team to team. So far the winning team would be getting $60 and keeping their $10. We could make it $20 or something, but lets keep it per car entered, not according to how many members. IMO

no sir, it's across from the pizza hut on hwy 60 just past green street right by the BK lounge. has a speed bump at the bottom of the steepest hill but im sure we can conjur up something...maybe a jump? lol jk, but seriously let me know, here are some pics, first one is looking down the big hill, second one is looking from the small hill on the opposing side, and the last one is looking up the big hill, big hill is apprx 100yds from top to bottom, small hill just as long but not soo steep, plenty of parking in back for teams and 10'000 sopts out in front, the old free chapel would not be bad either but i think it has more than a few speed bumps and i believe milton martin honda rents out the lower lot to store cars. enjoy and let me know

The 2008 IA Soapbox Derby and BBQ

Date: Saturday September 27, 2008. (Can be changed if deemed necessary)
Time: BBQ at 12 noon, Race(s) at 2 PM
Place: To be determined! Please PM me any ideas. Hoping for a central location near the perimeter.

The Event
Come join us for a friendly meet-and-greet with grilled burgers and dogs, cold beer and soda at 12 noon. At 2 PM, the race(s) will begin! Teams who wish to compete must build a vehicle to race in (more info below in the rules section). Grab those dusty bicycle wheels out of your basement, do some junkyard rummaging, bust out the old steering wheel you had before you got that baller Nardi and that stock seat you had before those sexy Recaros, whatever! Do whatever it takes to build a functional vehicle!

Everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of whether or not you are participating in the build and race. PM this page to all of your friends! Everyone is encouraged to come talk, have a good time, and watch the hilarity ensue as IA's finest compete for glory, bragging rights, and cool looking bruises. Be sure to bring your cameras and videocameras!

Please commit to bringing a food/drink item if you plan on attending. Indicate in this thread if you plan on attending and what you will bring to contribute to the BBQ - I'll keep a list in this original post. Even if you absolutely cant afford to bring some food for some reason, let me know that you'll be coming so I can keep a basic head count.

The Rules
Teams must consist of 10 members or fewer. Please abide by the honor system during the building phase!
Your team must build a single-manned vehicle to compete in the race.
No engines will be allowed, whatsoever! The car must be gravity-driven ONLY, as the race will be downhill. No pushing is allowed.
Your car MUST have functional steering and brakes - No exceptions. All cars will be examined before the race to make sure they meet this requirement.
You MUST have a helmet to wear - bicycle helmet, motorcycle helmet, football helmet - I don't care.
You may use any parts you'd like, automotive or otherwise.
No pre-made vehicles are allowed - you're not racing a rolling shell or a skateboard; You've gotta make it!
Shop sponsorship is encouraged, but please don't hire a shop to build your car. Metal fabrication, paint, and things of that nature are probably the factors that make the most sense as far as shop involvement is concerned.

If you have any questions about any of these rules, please feel free to PM me.

The Prizes
Consolation prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, as well as the following categories: best overall car, riciest ride, best-dressed driver/team, and perhaps a few surprises. Don't expect anything fancy - we're just doing this to have some fun!

If you plan on competing, PLEASE PM me your team name, the name of all your team members, and their IA names as soon as possible! I will list these on this post so everyone knows who they're up against.

I'll add more details, rules, and more to this post as they come up.

no the hill is not the longest ever...but do you really want a home made, half insepcted, throw together soap box car killing someone lol? i have used this hill for this EXACT purpose before and we had to use the opposing hill thats not as steep due to the first three that raced, either got wobbly and flipped them over, or there cars did not hold up, it's steeper and longer than it looks, there not hard to remove (asphalt speed bumps) and im almost sure they would let us remove it for the day then replace it with one of those rubber ones from Grainger, there only around 100$...and i have a hammer drill and anchors to secure it to the existing asphalt. just an ides...plywood ramp tho...very tempting and would make some GREAT pictures. if my squad is up for it next week we will use my old go kart frame and video tape someone going down the hill on it to give you a good idea, speed bump won't be a problem for this kart tho. goon squad you down for this?

got a vid or two, had to use a DYNO vfr bmx bike with no chain, but found an EXCELLENT spot in the area, did a test run with GK on the bike and me with my video phone behind him in my hatch, it goes straight for around 250ft, makes a HARD right (he had to use the brakes on the bike) then down again for another 250ft or so, pavement ends and then it turns to grass uphill so if anyone gets out of control or has brake loss issues we'd be fine. we could easily go 4 wide on this course, PLENTY of parking, nice place for some tents and grilling/hanging out. did not get vids of this place due to DJ had to leave early, i have a contact at this place im going to talk to them next week and go from there, i figure the WORST they'll charge 2$ per person to use the premises, thats cheaper than going thru the city and shutting down a road for a few hrs, we'll see how it goes.

got the go-kart working and in rolling chassis form, the one that we were going to use as a demo vehicle for a test run on the hill, waiting on tibby britches to get back to me and hopefully we can video a couple good runs of this thing.

did a few test runs last night, seems like a good place to do it, clocked the kart at 43mph on one run so it should be interesting, if anyone has connections or several bails of hay just laying around we'll probably need them come race day. hopefully everything will work out and we can get some video's this evening.

my wife works hi up in the ymca and they rent out several rooms up there on the campus to do there training in on the weekends, free chapel has some sort of substance abuse rehab program there doing, i'm thinking i will use that to pitch the idea of using the event as a fund raiser for the participants. would only be like 1$ or 2$ per person but that might be what it takes to secure this location.
