Everywhere in the tuning industry, the ATS carbon clutch is the talk of the town right now. Pedal feeling as light as stock, crisp engagement, excellent durability, distortion free, and easy half clutch - etc. CB (Car Boy magazine) did not take the story at the face value, and with some doubt in our minds, we tested the car with ATS carbon clutch. The pedal pressure is amazingly light and the whole operation is exhilarating. That was our report in the last month's issue.

By the way, have you ever noticed the logo "ATS&ACROSS" in the catalog and on the boxes of the products? ATS is a popular tuning parts manufacturer, but do you know anything about ACROSS? So CB conducted an interview on ACROSS this month. We explore the stories of carbon performance, research, and development.

We found that ACROSS is not a tuning parts manufacturer at all. ACROSS manufactures and sells its unique carbon products which are processed by the special method of C/C (Carbon Carbon) composite. Their products are utilized in the airline industry and transportation industry, like the super fast bullet train. The C/C composite technology was initially developed for a military and aerospace industry. The mission of ACROSS is to apply this super technology to the development of the popular industrial products (the products regular people like us use).

What happens if the C/C composite is used for an automobile clutch system?
Mr. Nakagawa " There are millions of products made of carbon materials. One example would be carbon stick for a battery electrode and the other example would be Carbon Kevlar used for aero dynamic parts. Like there are thousands of varieties in the aluminum, carbon has as many varieties and characteristics. Among them, C/C composite is 1) specific gravity of 1.7 [ Iron is 7.8], 2) withstands temperatures of more than 800 degrees centigrade, and 3) virtually distortion fee [ 1/10 of Iron]. Those are the characteristics bet fit for clutch disks"

Wait, wait, this interview is proceeding 100% at Mr. Nakagawa's pace. I flatter myself that I am not good at chemistry, physics, mathematics, and English (what else?). I do not have any words. Sounds like everything is great. Are you telling us everything?

Mr. Nakagawa "Are you asking if there are any shortcomings in C/C composite? Yes, there is. The price. We could not do much about this. Besides that, it depends on the application."

The carbon I know (or at least I thought I knew) is very light indeed but is fragile, not very durable, and not heat resistant. How could you use that for an automobile clutch which rubs against the steel pressure plates?

Mr. Nakagawa " Well, some carbon materials have those characters. One of the very interesting carbon properties is that of solid lubricant. By that I mean, carbon itself has a property of lubrication. Metal materials do not have this property. That is the main reason that oil is essential for the lubrication for the internal parts of an engine and a transmission. It is virtually impossible to use oil lubrication for a clutch. For a metal clutch system, frictional wear and distortion from the heat are unavoidable."

Then, how does the application of carbon disk change the situation?

Mr. Nakagawa "With an appropriate break in period, there will be lubricant film on the surface of carbon disks. The existence of this film reduces the frictional wear dramatically. In other words, it is like oil is applied on the surface of clutch disk, but at the same time, once the clutch is engaged, the disks and pressure plates stick together very strongly. This useful application of C/C property was found during the initial development stage of the ATS&ACROSS carbon brake system." " When you press the brake pedal, there is a very tiny moment of slippage on the carbon rotor. Then with the frictional heat, a strong grip is applied. We immediately recognized that this property will best fit a clutch system, which led to the birth of the ATS&ACROSS carbon (C/C composite) clutch. We also found that the protective film is produced not only on the surface of a carbon disk, but also on the surface of steel pressure plate. (The proper word is probably [the film is transferred].) The result is an amazing reduction of disk friction war."

Of course the other character of C/C carbon, non heat distortion, keeps the disk from deforming and warping. This effectively extends the life of the clutch. With stock-like pedal pressure, excellent pressure plate rate, and gentle to the transmission even under a rough operation, as I told you, carbon is great.

From the manufacturer (ATS & ACROSS)
ATS &ACROSS invented a carbon material which is superior to the previous carbon technology could envision. The carbon disk has high myu - torque delivery, and is very strong and very durable even under the extreme heat. It is a world leading class disk. With the disk diameter of 230mm and ultra light weight, the carbon disk has turned an entirely new clutch system into reality. The excellent carbon characteristics provide a gentle operation without any damper, crisp engagement and disengagement, and light pedal pressure. ATS &ACROSS has realized those properties which used to be considered contradictory.
