So if ya'll haven't heard already it's now official GM filed this morning..
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- General Motors Co. filed for bankruptcy Monday morning, after months of speculation and attempts by the government to help the 100-year-old company avoid a potentially crippling event for the already weakened economy.
In a filing to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, the Detroit-based automaker reported total assets of $82.3 billion on a consolidated basis, with total debt of $172.8 billion.
GM (GM 0.75, -0.37, -33.04%) was represented in the filing by Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. The judge for the case has not yet been chosen.
The bankruptcy filing follows the company's failure to meet President Barack Obama's demand that it come up with a plan by June 1 that would return it to profitability.

What's really interesting is that DOW futures are up through the roof.. Odd.. Didn't see that one coming..
GFT on Monday forecast a "stunning opening" for the first trading day of summer, expecting the Dow Jones industrial average will open up 120 points while the S&P 500 opens up 15 points.
"We saw a positive PMI number from China overnight which has given traders further confidence in the recovery story," the firm wrote. "It feels like the driver today is fear amongst fund managers that they are missing the rally.
"As we start the second half of 2009, many are buying now to make sure they are more heavily invested in equities than they have been up to now," the firm wrote.
