    Default engine codes P1582 & P0440

    Have these on my 97 Jetta GT and ive tried the most common solutions to fix it but no dice..yet.

    Anyone had these before and gotten rid of them?

    What have you checked? Have you tried using a smoke machine to see if you have any leaks, or any of the valves are working properly?

    smoke machine, no. i havent done it that way simply for the fact that i cant get my hands on one, but i did peak around and use starter fluid to see if it would rev and blah blah.

    likely a broken vacuum line to the evap purge solenoid, or a bad solenoid. common problem.

    you are experiencing a vacuum leak.
    You're right - I have no idea what I'm talking about...
