Considering a GTO.. even with the stock shifter is pretty cake to shift I am not sure how he was missing gears like that. Sounds like a confidence issue to me.

dude that stock shifting you GTOs boys have is junk... there is no feeling to it. i didnt know if it was in 1st or 3rd and sometimes even 5th... so slopping. ive felt better shifters in my freinds old ranger.

my friend had a gto for awhile when moved up to a 450whp supra, while having the GTO he never miss shifted put powershifted semi-hard and it broke one night we were on back roads. still went into gear but it sucked.
yeah i had my factory lever break on me once... decided to replace it then lol.
