    Cool Top Drifting Cars?

Okay, I was talking with a buddy of mine, & he asked me a question. I'm sorry if this is a repost, & or a noob question. Okay, if the 240SX is considered the #1 drift car, then whats 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10?

When he asked me I really didn't know, so I said f-it I'll take the bashing & ask. So all opinions welcolmed.....Vegeta

Honestly that is all opinion. 240s are the most common, yes, but that doesn't necessarily make them the best. I'm not saying that they are bad or anything, but there are too many variables to truly say that they are the top.

i'd have to say look at Formula D. S2000's, Miatas, 350z's, vipers, AE86...etc etc. pretty much any rwd platform that can be tweaked to have copious amounts of controllable oversteer.
    Who knows?

I definately appreciate the opinions fellas. I do know there is no ONE-one car, but I wanted to get general idea of what cars. I know F&F showcases only Supra's,& RX-7's, & mixes in a surprise car every now & then.lol....Vegeta

    In no particular order:

FD RX7 (if you know how to keep the engine cool)
    240SX
    AE86
Miata (It's got the balance, but it's gotta have the balls to match it)

And...um....probably something JDM like a Chaser or Aristo. I'm not really into drifting personally, but all those cars have the ability to kick ass sideways (with a driver that knows what they are doing). A lot of "drifters" probably won't agree with my choices, but I could give a fuck about what they think.

Mustang. No turbo lag and tremendous torque for spinning the rear tires. Throw in the IRS from the SVT Cobra and it should be decent.

Even though I did see this one vid on Youtube of some guy drifting the hell out of his Civic, I might recommend that as #2.

the key to drift cars is expense the cheaper the better since there is a good chance of wrecking them. that is why 240, ae86 and miata's are the top choice before difting started to become big u could give away 240's now people are getting high $ for them.

it seems like the popular type cars dont win as much as the heavier more powerful cars do.. it almost seems like a bigger more powerful car is a success for drifting.

I dont think there really is a "best" or "#1" car for drifting. I have driven pretty much all the popular chassis of "drift cars (S2000, Miata [duh], AE86, 300ZX, 240SX [SR and KA], FC RX-7) and they're all different. In my opinion, the 240 is most popular because thats what was seen drifing in Japan because the options they get they we didnt. Also, the car is relatively easy to drive/drift as its demenor is pretty slow reacting. The 300ZX TT i drove was similar to this too, just with better power delivery. Smaller cars like the AE86 (made popular by Initial D) require more power mods to make better, though i made my 96 Miata very adept for drifting in n/a form with decent suspension. The handling on these cars is much more twitchy and requires MUCH more driver input to keep the car sliding as it would rather grip. I dont think the Miatas caught on because they hold their value (for the better ones with 1.8 and Torsen LSD's) and because of the "girly" image a lot of people assosiate with them. Too bad

I myself enjoy having a car that takes a lot of "staying on top of" to drift, and its still "different" to be drifting a Miata.

    But for prespective in price:

    240-----
Chassis- $1500 to $2000 for a beat up car with no care for looks, $3000+ for a clean body and good condition.
SR- $2000 for a good deal on a motor and install.
Suspension- $800/$1200+ for good new stuff
    intercooler- $300+
LSD- $600+ for something good (not a VLSD from J30 or HICAS car, VLSD is acceptable but others are much better and mroe consistant)

    Miata-----
    90-93 with 1.6 and no lsd $1000-$3000
    94-97 with 1.8 and TorsenLSD $2500-$5000
    Various Turbo kits- $2000-$5000
Superchargers-$2200-$4000 (there is a bad ass one for $2500 with potential to go to 300rwhp)
    Suspension $500-$1200 for new stuff

See... its all relative to what you like to look at.

OK, i would type more, but im at work and need to get going.

The first american to win the D1GP was driving a Mustang. I think thats what you were referring to. Vaughn Gitton Jr. was the driver.

Heavy + Power = Lots of Smoke
Lots of Smoke = Happy Judges
    Happy Judges = You Win

I personally don't care how much smoke is put down. To me, it's all about the line. If you're smoking tires like crazy but swinging wide, then it's no good. Kind of like the Datsun I had.
