Wedding Turns to Prayer Vigil for Bride

DULUTH, Ga. (AP) - A lavish wedding with 600 guests seemed destined to become a prayer service after police called off the search Friday for a missing bride-to-be, saying they have ``turned over probably every leaf in the city.''

Jennifer Carol Wilbanks disappeared Tuesday after her fiance said she went on a jog and never came back. Hundreds of police and volunteers spent the week searching the woods of this Atlanta suburb for the nurse.

With authorities acknowledging Friday they have no solid leads, relatives offered a $100,000 reward and said wedding guests will likely still gather at the church Saturday, but for a prayer vigil instead.

Attention in the case has now turned to fiance John Mason, a 32-year-old office manager who teaches a Sunday school class and coaches his church's youth basketball team. Mason has refused to take a police polygraph test except under conditions outlined by his attorney, Police Chief Randy Belcher said.

The fiance's lawyer turned in results from a privately administered polygraph, which family members said he passed, but Belcher said police still wanted to talk to him.


The fiance and his lawyer have requested the police polygraph to be videotaped, something Belcher said no law enforcement agency ``that's worth anything'' would do. Belcher said negotiations about the polygraph would continue. Mason's lawyer did not immediately return phone calls to elaborate..


Three computers seized at the home Thursday were being analyzed, but the police chief would not say whether they found anything useful.


Meanwhile, tearful family members gathered at the home of the soon-to-be-married couple, and were frustrated by the lack of clues. Police are testing some strands of hair and a few articles of clothing turned in, but added they had no reason to believe that any of it belonged to Wilbanks.


Wilbanks' uncle, Mike Satterfield, said he didn't fault police for wrapping up the search: ``You can only search so much and so many times.''


The hunt for Wilbanks consumed this tight-knit town for days. Her picture and newspaper articles about her disappearance were on telephone poles and shop windows.


A friend of Wilbanks', Killie McCauley, said the wedding was ``the talk of the town.'' Fourteen bridesmaids were planning to stand beside her as she married Mason, whom a friend described as ``a big teddy bear.''


``He's one of the kindest people you'll ever meet,'' said Melinda Larson, a friend of Mason's who was planning to attend the wedding. ``Jennifer had a dream of this huge, elaborate wedding, and John was so supportive.''


Mason attended a family news conference but did not talk to reporters. Satterfield, the bride's uncle, said Mason wanted to talk but wasn't sure what to say. ``There's not much John can say that wouldn't make speculation worse,'' Satterfield said.


Mason works at Mason Primary Care, which his family owns, said Andy Parsons, the Mason family's management consultant.


``He is one of the most decent, upstanding Christian men I've ever met,'' said Parsons, who meets weekly with Mason for a private Bible study session. ``He's the teacher. I'm the pupil.''


He said Mason is frightened.


``He is scared at the moment. His fiance disappeared. He's scared for Jennifer's safety,'' said Parsons, who has visited Mason at home since Wilbanks' disappearance. ``I would say he's drawing on every ounce of strength that he's got. He's still trying to remain positive.''


After the family and police spoke with reporters Friday, police started dismantling a search center that had been set up in a strip mall parking lot about a mile from Wilbanks' house. A mobile police unit was packed up and yellow crime tape was rolled up and put away.


Family members said they would spend the night once planned for a rehearsal dinner praying for Wilbanks.

She had a good portion of the country concerned (aspecially after the scott peterson case) This is behavior you could expect from a 10 year old, not a woman over 30. How are you going to pretend it was a kidnapping? It reminds me of that girl that faked her own kidnapping in WI I think. She got caught on video buying her own kidnapping supplies.

actually it was Alberqurqe NM, she was in Las Vegas and took a bus back to Alber. and called her parents and the police from a local 7-11. How is she going to sit there and say that she did not realize it would become such a big deal.

There is a flipside to this. SHE never called the police (until the end) to state anything, her family did. Technically, she was not responsible for the man hours and such searching for her because she did not initiate the missing persons claim.
Now, she did (from NM) claim to have been kidnapped and later revoked that claim. I do believe there should be some legal action but I don't think that jail fits the bill here.

But any prudent and non-retarded person would safely be able to deduce that if they walk out of their home, which they share with a soon to be husband, to go for a "jog" and then they DON'T return......that person would KNOW that someone will be "looking" for them.

She IS very much responsible. She is the only reason for the season sorta speak. But for the fact that she made a decision to take off, none of this would have happened. So she IS very much the culprit and therefore liable for whatever chain of events she set into motion.

BTW, has anyone even thought about the fact that this little hoax has now indirectly placed other people in danger? How? By the mere fact that since this was a HUGE media showcase, now the entire world will be a little less apt to believe subsequent mysterious dissapearances. The ole "Cry Wolf" syndrome.

This is regarding the thread at whoreslounge since y'all can;t keep it civil down there.

T-MO....IMo, you are right, money has come part with it, but the most important thing that attract media attention and the crowd is how her family,fiancee friends ect ect work hard to find her. I was there on Duluth hwy passing MAson house and they post notice everywhere, stand in the middle of traffic stopping people and ask them whether they have seen her. Money play apart too, but it's only 1 % of it because the rescue team doesn't get paid..they don't get rewarded 100,000 for trying to find her. It's all about the involvement of her family members and friend.

The area in which you live has alot to do with it too. I can give you a 'seen it with my own eyes' example. Then too, they had alot of leads with that case.

my example: some Atlanta police just don't care. Ok about 2yrs ago my boyfriend's neice called him and said that her baby's father had her and the kid locked into the house and wouldn't let her leave. They had gotten into an argument and she was going back to her house with the baby who was only about 7-8 months. He had vandalized the car (broke windows, busted a tire, and scratched up the car) He heard her on the phone and came in wildin' out and cussing saying that she wasn't leaving and that he dared us to do something. This is happening off of Dill Avenue in Atlanta. (if anyone knows Dill then you would know how bad and how many people are killed on that street alone over the years.) We strap up in bulletproof vests and got the guns ready for protection of course. We switched to a car that wasn't familar to these guys, especially baby daddy. We rode through to the house and when we were riding through he had about 8-10 guys walking around, sitting on cars with all types of guns out.

So we were like we can't win this one. So we went up to the police station up the street for help. We went in and told them what was happening and they just didn't give a fuck. One officer said he was going to take a shit first, 2 more were playing video games, and everyone was just lounging. One officer was taking statements and was all slow and unconcerned. Thats when my boyfriend yelled "look if ya'll not gonna do anything, I am about to take it in my own hands! I would really hate for someone to get killed in this situation......" He went off. Thats when they finally jumped to their feet and went down there. All hell broke loose.

So thats why I say, its not a racial thing but more so a social thing.

I guess you are right on this one.Duluth is a small city and crime rates are very minimal.I won't be suprised that the ATL PD won't do anything since they have a lot of things to handle.Can we do anything abt it? yeah....MOVE OUT and live in smaller city.!

I don't live in Atlanta. Thank God and that's only 1 reason why not. My grandmother still lives there and I grew up in Atlanta. I can tell you many more stories including one where a person broke into my grandmothers house and she saw him run downstairs, called the police, who are only 5 minutes away (and thats including the stop light). It took them almost 2 hours to come out to see what was going on. Luckily my older brother was up the street. He came home and found the guy in the closet scared as.... He held the guy til police got there. LOL She lives in the Cascade area. Although her house was there before all the million dollar house spouted up. Now the police response is Wayyy better than what they use to be. All because ppl took a stand.

I am cool where I live now. I live in College Park and have for a good while now.
