Thread: Ever wondered how much of a difference an external flash makes on a DSLR(Nikon D70)?

    Thumbs up Ever wondered how much of a difference an external flash makes on a DSLR(Nikon D70)?

    I have a Nikon D70, and I have been very pleased with the pictures it produced. In lowlight or poor light situations indoors, I would use a tripod, so I wouldn't have to use the flash, or I would mount my 50mm 1.8 lens, so I could get a better picture hand holding the camera without the flash. Using the flash indoors on things closeup or anything a few ft away never looked as good vs pictures taken outside. The pictures from my D70 with my on-board flash looked the same as my point and shoot Nikon 4300 4.0mp camera with the flash. I always accepted that's how the pictures will turn out. Just kinda washed out and crappy.

    I started to research and read about adding an external flash for my camera. I never thought much of it and really didn't think it would make that much of a difference. I always thought it was just another thing I had to learn and something that was difficult to incorporate. I bought one to see how much of a difference it made to indoor shooting. WOW, is all I can say. I never knew what a difference an external flash makes. I can't even imagine not ever having this now. The light that it makes when you bounce the flash directly up in the air makes the pictures appear as if they were taken with no flash under good indoor light like if you had it on a tripod. If any of you were ever wondering if you needed an external flash, or wondered what kind of a difference it would make to your DSLR picture taking take a look. I highly recommend an external flash as your next purchase for you DSLR people.

    I had the flash on commander mode and had it mounted on a tripod 3 ft away from me shooting down from the left side.

    Aweosme man. Do you knwo if that same flash will work on the d50? Also (posted this in another thread too) but what kind of tripod are you using? I need one badly...

    The dog is a min pin, and I used one of those cheap ass tripods from microcenter. The samsonite brand that was like $12-15 or so. It works very well. They always have that model on sale for the low low.

    The flash will work on the D50/70/70s/200. All of those cameras support CLS(creative light system). Your camera doesnt support commander mode, so that means you can't remotely fire the flash from your camera. On a few of those shots, the flash wasn't mounted on the camera. The flash comes with a small stand that you mount the flash to and then you can mount that to a tripod. The on board flash of the D70 can remotely trigger the sb-600 external flash unit from across the room. It's sick. Hell you can buy 4 sb-600's and remotely fire all 4 flashes at once.

    Yeah external flashes are always a big difference on any DSLR.

    Ah, good to know. Is there a wired link available so i can connect it and fire it remotely? Once i was takign pics with a professional and for some reason my camera was setting off her umbrella flashes. dunno why...

    That I am not sure of. I wouldn't too much about it since you probably wouldnt use that feature too much. There are 2 flash models. The sb-600 and the sb-800. The SB-600 is only $160-170 or so while the SB-800 is like $350+ Way too expensive. The SB-600 natively only supports slave mode meaning it can only receive signals from a master flash to fire. Since the D70 on board flash can act as a master it can fire the SB-600 remotely. The Sb-800 is a master and slave flash unit meaning the SB-800 can trigger other sb-600/800's remotely. So, if you wanted to have the remote capability, you can buy (1) SB-800 and have that mounted on your hot shoe above the on board flash and that can remotely trigger as many SB-600/800 flashes you buy in the future. That is an expensive option though.

    Were you using your on board flash? If so some umbrella flashes also have a remote flash activation. Basically when you fire any flash it will trigger them to fire.

    Dean you’ve been buying some nice upgrades!

    I have a D70S and use the same flash, I like it too. Word of warning if you’re using a soft plastic diffuser, firing it quickly will scorch the diffuser and the flash cover, if you start to smell something nasty on the diffuser (indescribable smell) back off quickly to save the unit, trash the soft diffuser and pickup a hard one…
